In truth, 1913 was the best year progressives ever had. It is their 1776. Nineteen thirteen also gave the country the XVII Amendment and the Federal Reserve. And let’s not forget that Woodrow Wilson, their George Washington, took office in 1913.

Here’s another anniversary Democrats do not want anyone to remember:

Twenty years ago, on February 28th 1993, the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) launched an assault on the Branch Davidian religious compound just outside Waco, Texas. The resulting siege ended more than seven weeks later, on April 19, but not before claiming the lives of 80 men, women and children -- many burned to death in the final inferno that destroyed the compound.

The justification for the Waco Massacre is very much tied to today’s big push for banning many rifles:

The government claimed it possessed pre-raid evidence that Koresh and his followers were stockpiling illegal, automatic firearms, and was manufacturing illicit drugs within the compound’s several buildings. Ultimately, no evidence was ever revealed establishing that any automatic firearms were located, or being produced, at the Waco compound although this provided the legal basis for the ATF investigation and initial raid.

Think what the federal government can do to law-abiding Americans when so-called assault weapons are banned legally, not to mention what they can do to anyone who uses a rifle to defend themself against the government —— assuming they live long enough to see the inside of a courtroom.

NOTE: The perpetrators of the Waco massacre and their gun control allies would have everybody believe they defecate ice cream because they want to disarm law-abiding Americans. They imply they wouldn’t harm a fly. They claim gun controls will end violence in America while they sneer at Americans who want to hang on to every type of weapon they can get. I’ve yet to hear one of them explain how banning assault rifles guarantees an end to government violence like the Waco Massacre.

How you would come to an opposite conclusion in their situation — especially with all the obvious — the destruction of evidence, the videotapes, the missing half of the front door — is beyond me. You might remember that the FBI lied over and over and over again that it did not have fragmentation grenades, and then it turns out they had in excess of 240 millimeter fragmentation grenades there. I don’t know of any other reason to have fragmentation grenades unless you plan to kill someone.

The Republican Congress has been intensely critical of President Clinton and Janet Reno on Waco. Did you find it odd for a Republican leader of Danforth’s status to exonerate 100 percent an administration his party has been so critical of?

The answer is no. Not if this is the same John Danforth that told us that Clarence Thomas would make a great Supreme Court justice, but [Thomas] would then go on to write some of the most police-state friendly opinions in the history of the country. Danforth is an establishment, status quo conservative. I think his heart would be in protecting the reputation of the establishment.

I think you need to review your history. Initially the power of the Federal Reserve system was predominantly in the regional banks who had locally elected boards. The Board of Governors had very little power. This resulted in the bad performance of the Fed 1928--1934.

Here is a little thought to chew on, the FBI and ATF were well aware that David Koresh jogged every morning, could have picked him up at any time well before the showdown, instead allowed him barricade himself on the compound and force his hand. The question that needs to be addressed, did Janet Reno and ATF purposely stage the event or did one or the other just totally bungle the operation? These "criminals" as you call them would have never been placed in the position if the FBI, DOJ, and ATF, had thought before acting.
