Yale University administrators have replaced “freshman” and “upperclassman” with the terms “first year” and “upper-level students” in official campus publications, Yale Daily News reportedon Friday.

It should be a non-issue. Some languages cannot be made gender neutral because their nouns are either masculine or feminine and the verbs agree with them. It is how European languages evolved and no value is attributed to the genders. For example, in the Romance languages, the moon is feminine (la luna) and the sun is masculine (el sol) whereas in German it is the opposite (der mond and die sonne) and for only an arbitrary reason. The actual gender of the nouns means nothing. English does not have this feature and has no verb declensions.
