Congress has opened every session with a prayer by a chaplain since before day one of our country.

George Washington himself added "so help me God" to the oath of office.

And contrary to the second post in this topic, individual speakers at official state events have always been allowed to invoke a deity. Some ignorant school officials may occasionally contradict that right, but the courts invariably smack them down for it.

It is freedom of religion, not freedom FROM religion. We can believe in a God, but you don't have to believe in mine.

I wonder what would happen if the day before the inauguration, Obama announced he had fully converted to Islam, or Buddhism, or atheism, or Wicca. And he changed the swearing in to fit that new religion.
