a dictator is a boss or spouse that tells you what to do. We don't like it but when is it ok to be dictated by those in power? Is sometimes ok or never ok?

A Benevolent Dictatorship, how to really get some shit done. And if that's the only way a people can be ruled, say in the Middle East or the developing world, bring it on.

I'd never say it's okay, but it can be better than certain alternatives. For instance, a group like ISIS could have never survived under Saddam Hussein's Iraq, and if he would have been replaced by another dictator they still wouldn't have gained a foothold.

A dictatorship is Ok when the collective has crossed into inviability, wherein the population has lost the means to reason objectively, thus is spiraling into collapse... requiring that those who are still in possession of their faculties must take charge and cull from the collective, those who are infecting the collective with inviability.

We saw this in the dictatorship of one George Washington, wherein he formed an Army on behalf of the sane, and used the power of that army, combined with the forces of universal good, OKA: Divine Providence, to force out those who were determined to suppress the means of the individual to be free.

Once that had been accomplished GW then turned the reigns of power back over to the people.

The obvious answer is when discipline in an survival situation calls for the greater whole to submit to the leadership of a single guiding entity. Most people would recognize this as a military organization. The life of the people around you and of course, yourself is dependent upon the entire group following, without or with little question, the orders of the leader. In the case of the military, the immediate Officer in charge or Commanding Officer. Armed Forces come in two flavors. Conscripted and voluntary.

Obviously, the conscripted military is going to have huge problems following the dictator (commander) where as the voluntary group understands what it was they signed up for.

In civilian life, there are almost no circumstances in which it is acceptable or permissible to submit to a dictator. In truth, it is the duty and obligation of free people to resist dictators or eliminate them.

Before anyone starts throwing out the Obama is a dictator schtick....let Me remind you of what a real dictator looks like..

From Wikipedia:

"In the Roman Republic the term "Dictator" did not have the negative meaning it has later assumed. Rather, a Dictator was a person given sole power (unlike the normal Roman republican practice, where rule was divided between two equal Consuls) for a specific limited period, in order to deal with an emergency. At the end of his term, the Dictator was supposed to hand power over to the normal Consular rule and give account of his actions – and Roman dictators usually did."

With dictatorships there is no accountability. One man controls a whole country. He decides how the government is run. He decides how the courts will decide cases. He decides the country's immigration and emigration policies. He decides how people in his country will live their lives. He decides when, where, and how every company will do business. He decides whether people who disagree with him will live or die.

So when is a dictatorship ok?

Never.

Usually being the key word there.

There's one particularly famous one who did not hand that power back...

Not really. Hold together countries that shouldn't exist, or regimes ditto, yes. I lived in Franco's Spain. A quiet, corrupt outrage a lot of RWers liked. NO MORE.
