What is so wrong with zeroing out the income tax for the middle class?

I'm kind of curious of why people would reject this idea considering that the federal government collects so little from the poor and middle class when you compare it to every other tax bracket. It would definately help the poor out and perhaps create an incentive to work and perhaps move up into higher income tax brackets. I can't figure out why anyone would be opposed to this and why isn't the generosity of our elected politicians kicking in. They seem to want to hand us stuff for free all the time but the minute we want to keep more of our own money they seem to cease being generous.
