Detroit used to be the richest city in the nation, but Progressive policies of tax the rich and spend it on welfare programs left the city in ruins.

It happened in a quick manner for the region. Those oil shocks in the 1970's were not good. The whole industry changed. And we could not make good smaller cars that were more reliable than Japanese ones. The pressure to purchase small cars was great and foreign cars were limited to 10% I think and that was gradually lifted. We ended up with clunkers like the Vega, Chevette, Citation, Pinto, Pacer and many others that were designed on the quick.
Most of the factories were eventually just shut down and moved over seas to begin with. After free trade with countries like child , china that have no labor protections and extremely low wages were passed, The company's saw an easy way to get around unions. There was a reason why the vast majority of g m cars are produced outside of the us and have been for decades.

How Detroit went broke: The answers may surprise you — and don't blame Coleman Young

So the rich and middle class just got up and left for greener states. The reason why i posted this history of facts, is that California is doing the exact same thing, but on a larger scale. Only a matter of time when all of California will look like Robocop's Detroit.

MSN The left is so stupid that they never learn from their mistakes but always double down, thinking that taxing the wealth out of people will make the poor very happy. Unless WALLS are build to keep the rich from moving away, the rich will find...you got it....greener pastures....

The changeover of cars slowly started after the first oil shock in 1973. We had large vehicles. Popular ones. The citizens wanted smaller ones. Detroit retooled and built some smaller models. The quality was terrible. Catalytic converters were enforced with computers in cars expanding and that eventually put Japan in the driver's seat especially after the 2nd oil shock in 1979/1980. The Service Engine Soon warning was a norm in that era. Cars were force to up the MPG in vehicle with the catalytic converters and trucks were given some leeway with emissions. Otherwise, Japan would have taken over.

dimocrap scum think Wet Streets Cause Rain.

Honest to God, they're that stupid they can't understand Cause and Effect.

What caused the Companies to flee Dee-troit was the Unions. Unions are one of the most important cogs in the wheel that is the criminal enterprise called the democrat party.

Union Thug goes to dimocrap FILTH criminal Politician, "Irving, you get us that big contract and we'll mobilize our Union Thugs to make sure you win the next election."

criminal dimocrap FILTH politician, "Sure but you might have to make sure the ballots are being counted correctly because I dount think your GOTV efforst will be enough." Union Thug, Guido Stugatz, "Yeah, we can do dat, just make sure you don't let those Republicans interfere wid us making shit-cars."

Lather, rinse, repeat. Year after year after year after year after year.

dimocraps are scum
This is also the key reason why the Steel industry shuttered their plants in the early 80s. Hence why Bethlehem, PA and Lackawanna, NY are virtual ghost towns. Yet they keep right on voting for the enemy.

You get the government you deserve.

The average steel worker was not ANY part of the problem. They were overworked and underpaid. Want people to do that work then pay them.

The unions didn't allow the companies to innovate and upgrade to compete with the cheaper imported steel. So management had to shell out the big bucks for wages and bennies and had nothing for new equipment and facilities.

Welfare has destroyed a lot of places like Detroit.

Welfare does nothing but encourage laziness, stupidity, and selfishness. People that are those things devolve and eventually become angry, bored and demanding. They turn to their baser instincts and run on emotion.

To be a strong country and society you need people to be strong, smart, responsible and have morals, values and standards. Welfare over errodes all of those things because they don't have to be good people, they just do nothing and get handed just enough to scrape by and when you scrape by you get angry because you have nothing.

Welfare needs to be gotten rid of. Yes it would be hard on people to start with and a few will suffer that actually need it but over time people will improve. It isn't about the short term, it's about the long term.

We have too many peoplebin the workforce as it is. Where are all those people going to get a job?

Perhaps if we had 10 million people retire all at the same time that would help businesses.

There are vast areas of the United States inner cities that law abiding people dare not enter.... that is a symptom of poor leadership and we should not accept it.... these justices and liberal courts have made the situation almost unrepairable...
We need MAGA leaders to clean up our courts.... the federal level on down...
Siege heil.

From one old enough to remember the times, I'll partially agree with the OP's blame on progressive polices causing the decline of Detroit and other major cities. However, I totally disagree that tax-the-rich policy played any role.

The one liberal policy had nothing at all to do with taxing the rich. It was school busing for integration purpose and the condition of poor schools in minority areas. The progressive program of school busing took students from predominately minority schools to white schools and in some areas bused white students to these minority schools.

School busing along with the inner-city riots of the 1960, were the cause of "white flight" from our major cities. The resulting major loss in the tax base left cities poor and decaying.
