Regarding divorce, men do not usually keep everything because giving the items to women is a reflection of their traditional inability to provide for themselves because men have traditionally been given the jobs and at better pay than their female counterparts. Iow, it is a way of keeping women dependent on men. As for kids, they are given to the mother so the man can work without needing to take care of them and women are generally seen as the preferred caregiver since they give birth.
