The left trying to shut down free speech

I have a right to an account here on USMB! You hear that @maudes?! I am now un-fucking-touchable!

Why yes you do have that right and as an honored member here, you are fuckingtouchable :meow: when the maudes exorcise their rights to ban your ass

You're just trying to get your estate enlarged with flattery. It's working. Another 100 acres for you, my Lady.

Yet the FCC shut down the radio station that he was broadcasting from, that was his last ability to broadcast HIS OPINIONS. Last I heard opinions are not illegal or subject to regulation of any kind by any government entity. Yet it happened. IOW, his right to free speech has been violated. Period

With all due respect, you have no clue what you're talking about.

I have a HAM radio license. Without it, I have NO right to broadcast anything on those frequencies. The station that was shut down was illegally broadcasting. The content was irrelevant.....it was an illegal station. You have to get a license to use the radio spectrum in the USA. Had he done that, the FCC wouldn't have messed with him. But this guy decided to skirt the rules and got fined and shut down.

So yes. Opinions BROADCAST OVER THE RADIO SPECTRUM are definitely subject to regulation by the FCC.

Sure, the FCC does control & regulate 'media' that violate legal regulations AKA in this instance, the station had been pirating and broadcasting illegally. PERIOD.

Jones has been getting hit for his opinions......which may or may not be offensive to some or many, but opinions are not illegal. PERIOD.

Just seems a bit much when that station had been pirating illegally for over 5 years.....but all of a sudden when the social media platforms kick him out.....up steps the FCC......timing baby, timing

Timing is irrelevant. They were breaking the law and got caught.

Had this station been broadcasting anything else and been shut down it wouldn't have made the 5 oclock news.

Every radio station has a call sign. You get it when you get a license. No call sign, no license and you can't transmit.

So in the other forum I give you a hunk and I get a funny...…..here I'm getting ready to report you and you give me land???

Conservatives might want to rethink their whole free market idealism. I don't think they could handle it.

Are we talking about free markets, or virtual public spaces?

free market or free speech, it's all the same to the left...…...up for sale
You don't think there is a market for ideas?

This is why you might want to rethink the idea of the free market.
Far right conservatives are outnumbered and no amount of gerrymandering could solve this problem.
There aren’t any far right conservatives.

Why is the left so intolerant of opposing views? Or rather why are they so threatened by them?

In the instance of the last 3 years, I guess some of us learn from history, recognize an authoritarian/totalitarian regime in the making and are intolerant of the notion of living under a dictator.

I don't think Trump has recalled enough of his education to realize that he's paralleling Stalin, or if he even knows who Stalin is, but both say the press is the enemy of the people, and I find that idea intolerable. You?

The left are clueless. You people really have no idea what you have unleashed, your beat downs have only just begun.
America has already started the beat down.
Gallup; 56% disapproval rating
39% approve.

Trump Job Approval (Weekly)
When the worst poll for Trump gives him a higher approval rating than the day of the election in which he won, you know you are fucked when you go against him.

Gallup is an outlier, idiot.

Are we talking about free markets, or virtual public spaces?
If we are talking about the different private platforms that are available in the virtual public space then I think we are talking about the market.

Yet, Free Speech is being impinged on.

In a free market, those are the breaks. That is the point I am making.

So, why are the lefties so terrified of them/us being allowed to speak?

I don't think they are scared. I think they are tired of being used to spread hate, which is pretty much what you all sell.

This thread is about free speech......not free market as you've brought up
Have you substantiated a case for the violation of free speech? I thought this was about college, radio, tv and internet? In other words, the market.

well, however you want to market the speech.....but it's only free when there is a 'market' in which to speak
The market exists, you just need a platform in it. Too bad for you that you are behind the eight ball because all those leftist entities will attempt to squash any upcoming competition. And since free market idealism permits monopolization, good luck catching up.

Free market ideology has been taking a beating, or didn't you notice.

If the private services are abusing their monopoly to the harm of the consumers, and society, then it is time to regulate them.

Well there you go. Now we can stop pretending that the free market is synonymous with freedom.

Nature has selected liberals for extinction so in the long run everything will be right with the world.
Without liberals there would be no end to Jim Crowe, no vote for women.

You can do your best but we will remain to pester you when your hate over comes human decency.

Private institutions can't shut down your right to free speech. Only the government can.

They can and do all the time, where they are in charge. Where liberals rule, free speech is absent.
How much free speech is there on private conservative campus'?

If you can find me a conservative campus, where its students invited a speaker but was rejected by the university, I will likely condemn that too. Got any examples?

I support free speech. I think the open exchange of ideas is healthy for democracy. I disagree that unpopular or offensive speech should be banned, although there are exceptions.

Meanwhile, liberals in New York banned sodas that are too big and are now trying to ban restaurants in California from being able to serve soda to children. Liberals aren't about freedom. Liberals are about conformity and group-think.

That's bullshit. They're shadow-banning conservatives and even CONGRESSMEN on places like Twitter. Liberals censor conservatives because the liberal movement is totalitarian in nature and their arguments cannot tolerate the light of truth. The left has ALWAYS sought to silence others.

It pretty much is. There's a close correlation between socialism and totalitarianism.

Chelsea Manning and Reverend James Martin. Both were prevented from speaking at college campuses because of "conservative" outcry.

False equivalency of monumental proportions.
McCarthy was a senator who held congressional hearings to route out communists and ruin their careers, even though being a communist wasn't illegal.
Just his accusation was enough to get someone fired.

Rodrik is a college professor expressing an opinion.

You don't see a difference?
Right they are not stopping free speech per se, they are colluding to silence conservative voices. No matter haw many times you America hating regressives say other wise, that is EXACTLY what is happening. Now a mayor in Massachusetts. is calling for a boycott of Sam Adams beer because they praised Trump for his tax cuts. You people are evil.

Massachusetts mayor boycotts Sam Adams beer
