LOS ANGELES (CNN) -- My battle for marriage equality began in 1990, after my partner, Brian Binder, and I had a commitment ceremony. The ceremony was held at the end of a conference for Parents and Friends of Lesbian and Gays and was attended by more than 300 friends and members of both our families.

We were featured in a couple of books on gay marriage because the concept was so new at the time. We also registered as domestic partners and entered into every possible form of legal recognition available at the time.

A few years later, Brian was visiting his parents in Nevada to inform them that he was giving up his battle with AIDS. Something went horribly wrong, and he was rushed to the hospital. I flew there immediately.

As his caretaker, I knew his medical condition and had been involved in every medical decision. We had shared the joy of making a commitment to one another and the pain and suffering of a horrible disease.

But when I arrived, I was told I could not see him because I was not "family" and because my legal documents were valid only in California. Even as I heard him calling out my name, they refused to let me see him because we were not married. Brian died in 1992.

In 1995, I helped organize the first Freedom to Marry March in Los Angeles. Ten years later, the idea for A Day Without Gays was conceived.

* In Depth: Commentaries

I was discussing same-sex marriage with Delia Fine, my colleague at the A&E Network. I proposed a gay version of Lysistrata, an ancient Greek satire about Athenian women who withheld sex from their husbands until they agreed to stop going to war.

She replied, "what if gays went on strike instead?" and the idea was born.

Interesting.........come out of the closet and take a day off.

I guess that Prop 8 thing is really pissing some people off.

You are obsessed with all things gay, you even see gayness where none exists, you have a problem that you need to address.Maybe I can help you with it?It involves me bitch slapping the gayness out of you and reminding you that you are no longer in the navy therfore you do not have to play the part of the girl any more.

ABikerSailor retired from the Navy.

Only to find that the one job he was qualified for, the sailor for the Village People, was already filled.

So sad..............

I can see him now, mincing around in his little sailor suit dancing to Village People songs, shaking his skinny little bitch ass at the other sailors:lol:

Shit.....I figured that Sucking Moron and Roomy would like having an extra holiday during the silly season.

Sorry that you're not grateful guys.

I have a large number of gay/lesbian friends. It makes me sad that they are still not legally allowed to marry in most places. They come from all walks of life and deserve equality.

It's sad that people around the world are still so threatened by what other people do in the privacy of their own homes.

I'm really trying to make an effort to be cordial on this thread, but you're making it extremely difficult.

I'm sure he would look really cute being that he's lean and mean.

How Islamic societies deal with gay men:

1. Put them in an ugly track suit, surrounded by soldiers:

2. String them up.

3. Beat them.

4. Whip them.

I think pictures are generally best to get the point across about the religion of peace and tolerance.

Do you think a union of three men should be legal?

How about one man with four wives?

Or five men, four women and a pigmy goat?

Point being, once we redefine marriage...where do we draw the line?

You know what? The title to this thread is actually funny, since many anti-gay advocates see it as a disease, well then, give all the gay people sick leave, paid with free medical if it is.

Marriage should be between consenting adults. I have no issues with polygamy, polyandry, or other kinds of unions. I do believe that naaaaaa means naaaaaa, though, so I'd exclude goats from legal unions.

I actually wanted Sunniman to respond, but I guess he doesn't believe in gay people. Ahmedinejad actually said that gay people don't exist in Iran.

You sure don't want to be gay and be Muslim. Yes, pictures are worth a thousand words.

It's not redefining marriage, since marriage is actually a religious thing. It's redefining the rights of a union, redefining the contract not the religious aspect. If marriage was ALL just a law anyway then there would only be ONE acceptable ceremony and only a certain person could see over it. Also then no religion would be able to have any way in it at all. So all it does is allow a contract between two people, nothing more. There are a LOT of contracts that occur between two men and two women already, why the union contract does not have this same consideration is beyond comprehension.

Indeed, they have a don't ask, don't tell policy in Iran. If they find out you're gay, you die. Hence, no gay people.
