...if there is no budget agreement by Aug 2nd, and the US is at risk of defaulting on its constitional obligation to pay its debts?

How do people feel about this?

Any president can't just allow the US to be held hostage to the unwillingness of Congress to meet the constitutional obligations of the US to pay our legally incurred financial obligations because Congress fails to fulfill its constitutional requirement to raise the debt ceiling in order to insure that America does not default on its debt.

Good call. I can't think of a reason why he couldn't do this. He is charged with protecting this country, after all.

All not raising the debt limit does is stop us from borrowing more. We can still pay our debts, we would just have to divert funds from other programs, making debt service the first priority.

Are you saying that conservatives might rise up to try to overthrow the gov't? That would warrant the sending in of troops, which a president is perfectly within his rights to do as the head of the executive branch under the constitution AND current laws.

Perhaps Lord Obama should actually propose a budget that doesn't send us into an even further economic sinkhole. BTW... not getting his way isn't reason enough to impose martial law.

After Bush and O have ran up 8 trillion or so in debt in the last 8 years and laid us in the precarious position that we're in you're now giving O responsibility to protect us? Now, that would be beyond hilarious if it weren't so sad.

No, that's not at all what I said. If Obama were to do something this colossally stupid, it would render the Democrat party pointless for decades. Perhaps then the normal people who may still be Democrats will purge the party of the lunatic Marxists and Communists that have diseased the party for decades.

According to the Constitution it is. Read up.

The U.S. Constitution does not allow the President to send out the Military if he doesn't get his way. It it did, we wouldn't need Congress or the Judiciary.

So the constitution is marxist and communist? Are you saying that it would be unconstitutional for obama to do it, or would it just be politically wrong?

No, the Democrat party is full of Marxists and Communists.. THAT'S what I said. There's no constitutional basis for imposing martial law because a budget deal didn't get done. Especially since Obama's yet to propose one.

Anyhoo, it ain't gonna happen, even Obama's not that stupid.

Invoking emergency powers are always a last resort. Of course I'd have thought putting the US into default would have also been a last resort.

So to sum up: the Republicans are threatening to put the US in default and collapse the world economy, and the Democrats are threatening to end this 235 year experiment in democracy. Interesting days.

Republicans, at best, are playing a dangerous game of chicken with their insistence that any budget deal must be THEIR way, on THEIR terms. They seem to think that they can dictate to the Democrats in Congress AND to the Executive Branch. I beg to differ.

At WORST, Republicans are endangering the full faith and credit of the United States. I believe that's a violation of section 4 of the 14th Amendment. If Republicans don't change course, they are placing America's credit worthiness in serious jeopardy. It's also a threat to our economy as a whole and individual Americans' finances.

I don't think most Americans would take that lightly and would want measures taken to prevent that from happening.
