Republican Tyranny: Michigan is the proof of concept.

Well it seems that the autocratic plans for the country are being proven out in Michigan. Republicans won the legislature and have used emergency rules to fast track laws as BAU. They've taken over towns and tossed out local officials while ramming through un-popular bills without taking a vote. It seems that although they have a majority..they don't have the 2/3rds majority necessary to fast track. And it seems that the vote count might not have been "accurate". We've seen these sorts of things take place in other states, but none so brazen. Michigan is in the process of liqudating towns they don't like..and voter suppression.

Rachel Maddow said, “Under the Michigan constitution remember again you can only make a law take effect immediately if you have a 2/3 majority, if you have a super majority. Michigan Republicans don’t have that. In the House they don’t have a 2/3 majority. In order to get 2/3 on any vote, House Republicans would need the help of almost a dozen Democrats. You need 63 lawmakers on your side, before you get what the state constitution says you can have if you want that immediate effect right. You need 73 votes to take effect right away. So for the emergency manager law for example, Democrats voted against that law in a bloc. Republicans did pass it with their 62 votes and 62 votes is enough to pass it, but it’s not nearly enough for it to go into effect immediately, but regardless they just attached immediate effect to it anyway.”

Maddow pointed out that Republicans are claiming immediate effect passed with a 2/3 majority, but it didn’t happen that way. She pointed out that the emergency manager law and possibly the rest of the 500 bills the Michigan Republicans passed and used immediate effect may have been passed in violation of Michigan constitution.

She showed video evidence of Michigan Republicans violating the constitution and illegally passing bills, and discussed the Democrats lawsuit against the Republicans over their abuse of immediate effect. The court case matters because Michigan Republicans are trying to pass a law to make it harder to vote, and they are also trying to pass a law making it harder to put a referendum on the ballot.

<snip

The phased Republican murder of democracy in Michigan has never gotten the attention that it deserves. Michigan has taken a backseat to Wisconsin and the SB 5 drama in Ohio, but something is happening in Michigan that is more important than what is going on in those other states. For the first time in our history, a political party in a state is systemically eliminating democracy in order to create one party rule.

When Republicans ignore their own state constitution and violate the democratic process in the state legislature, that is call autocracy. When Republicans strip power away from voters and representatives and hand it to a non-elected appointee of the governor that is a democracy killing behavior.

Rachel Maddow Eviscerates Michigan Republicans for Circumventing Democracy

Oh Rachel Maddow. Why anyone would believe anything that ugly dyke said is beyond me.

We see the results of Democratic rule in MI: high taxes, businesses fleeing, decay, crime. Detroit is a whisker away from bankruptcy and state takeover. These are the direct results of Dem policies. This is Obama's future of America. The GOP is trying to take some desperate measures to turn around decades of mismanagement. And all the left can do is gripe.

Why so homophobic, homophobe? You know what they say about homophobes... they're more likely to secretly want it up the ass. Well, the male ones anyway.

Sorry us Norherners can't compete wage wise with Illegals, Chinese, Prison, Indian and Southern Red Neck labor. They're too cheap. They don't need dental. Got no teeth.

what do you have against the Illegals, Chinese, Prisoners and Indians Bobo?....thats not being a very good Liberal now is it?...they have no teeth?.....:eusa_eh:

Yes! Now you get it. The rich have never been richer and our wages have stalled. We make the same as we did 30 years ago because for 30 years you have been attacking unions. Their numbers went from 35% to 12% of the workforce. And as their numbers declined, so did our wages. But Corporations are breaking profit records. Healthcare, Oil Companies, Defense companies. And their CEO's are making 100 times what they did 10 yeas ago. That means you can't have a raise. Get it???

Which by the way, plays into what hurt the American auto industry and helped crash the economy. Remember when gas went up to over $4 a gallon on Bush's watch? That really hurt the American economy, especially the auto industries truck sales.

And if you guys really believe in free markets without government intervention, stop giving Toyota and Honda tax breaks to manufacture down south. Its hard to compete with that socialism. Government intervention in the market. Helping foreign auto companies bankrupt the US Auto companies. And then we overtook them! Obama did that shit!!!

Tell you what. why don't you get off your whining, hand-wringing ass and start your OWN business. See what it's all about. You'd soon be singing a different tune, I'm sure. You could be the perfect CEO of your own company, pay big wages, great benefits, everything. You could run any way you please. Maybe.

I was thinking instead of unionizing the people at my work. Lot of liberals that agree with me there.

are you still using the computer on company time?.....i know your one of the big sales people......but still.....

yea come to California......the Democratic Party ideal.....

I use to live in California.

San Francisco is one of the cleanest and loveliest cities in the nation.

not talking about Clean Sallow.....and somehow i think you know that.....Yorba Linda is a Republican little stronghold and its pretty fucking clean too.....and lovely.....now explain the fucking mess California is in....

There's not much to explain. California voted not to raise taxes and then voted to put people into prison after "three strikes". Like most other services if you put more stress on them..it costs money.

In any case..this isn't about California..it's about Michigan. Do keep up.

ok....why did you not tell Editec that when he brought up Maine?...maybe you should keep up yourself....but thats ok.....i have found that most "Liberals" have a hard time saying that Democrats/Liberals have had a big part in fucking up this State......i know,i know, only Republicans fuck things up....

What big part was that? Did Democrats pass a bill that deferred taxes if you invested in a third world country? Really? Oh wait..that was Eisenhower. Did Democrats encourage the auto industry to start building plants overseas? No wait..that was conservatives.

So go for it, Harry..must of been the high taxes..right?

Unions?

I'm not sure how the subject of Michigan got deflected on to my lovely home state...well, maybe I do...deflection is what the RW does best, but you are correct about what has added to California's budget problem.

The facts are that the state collects more taxes and fees as a percent of income than most other states, but local government has lower revenues in California. Total revenues to all governments as a percentage of income are very near the national average. On the expenditure side, the state spends less than the average for other states, but local governments spend much more. High local expenditures are financed by revenue transfers from the state that account for about 40 percent of the state’s budget. The cause of California’s unusual fiscal relationship is decades of initiatives that more severely constrain local revenues than state revenues. The state has responded by creating a system of state-local transfers that allow local governments to face a form of soft budget constraint, leading to excess local spending and lack of clear accountability for the state’s recurring fiscal crisis. Because the cause is the cumulative effect of numerous state-wide initiatives, the only plausible cure is initiative reform and revision of numerous initiatives, which most likely can be accomplished only through a state constitutional convention.

Institutional Causes of California's Budget Problem

California is an example of how a Direct Democracy might look good on paper, but when it is actually put into place, it doesn't work for shit.

Kaz is short for my home town, Kalamazoo, Michigan. I also have a Michigan MBA and was recruited heavily by Ford and other local companies, but decided to go to New York instead.

People like you have run the place since the workers realized they could vote themselves out of jobs because they ran companies into the ground with ridiculous rules or to other States to survive. Michigan is a workers paradise, with no jobs. And you continue working hard to keep it that way, Comrade. What Michigan really is would be a perfect example of what you are trying to do to the rest of the country and a reason they should ignore you.

One reason companies were run into the ground might have something to do with all those MBA's on the payroll. It might pay to let a few workers into the boardroom or the management meetings, don't ya think?

Management was certainly part of the problem that got the auto industry in the mess. But the government rules on unions has made recovery impossible. And it drove a lot of companies in other industries under or out as well.

I spent the bulk of my career as a supervisor and a manager and understand that job number one for many managers is keeping their own job and the job of those subordinates who make them look good. I know, I spent the bulk of my career in management and was amazed by the pettiness of some very well educated and seemingly intelligent.

That said, other than the obvious (ADA, Minimum Wage Rules, fuel taxes and safety concerns) which government regulations caused the auto industry crisis?
