After so many of his declarations and statements about all Mankind should be brothers, I was shocked to read this. It is, by far, the truest comment I've ever read by a “world leader.” Peoples who have known nothing but tribalism for centuries have no hold upon the reality of democracy- and never will.

He stole that from me. I've been saying it for years. It's not true, though, that they "never will." We were tribal, once, too. It just takes A LOT OF TIME and tears and effort and murder, etc. etc. They'll get it eventually. Same with Russia. All people crave democracy once they figure it out.

The question is what types of democracy does one crave? I for one find our form of democracy challenged and dangerous....especially when we can stiffer votes, gerrymander districts, allow the rich and powerful to control politicians and rig elections......if that's democracy, we need to rethink our own.

The question is what types of democracy does one crave? There's some really famous quote about democracy I can't quite remember, that essentially reminds us that democracy is hard work and takes constant vigilance. We in America have gotten lazy of late, but the current election cycle has had one good effect, at least--people are paying attention to politics again. I agree we have WORK to do, or we will end up as corrupt as Venezuela.
