There is a different thread out there about the state of NC perhaps outlawing any award not based on identified performance achievements by any entity receiving any government funding.

Without going into if such a law should be passed, what are your views on Participation Awards. These would include everything from the whole 6 year old soccer team getting a ribbon at the end of the year to High Schools giving out letters and the sports attachments that go on them.

If everyone gets a trophy, a trophy is meaningless. Recognition for having participated is one thing. But a celebration of failure, or mediocrity is counter productive, to incentivising excellence...

So, you are against High Schools giving out letters to those who complete a season of a sport.

You get a ribbon for showing up, and a trophy or a plaque only for winning, coming in the top 3, or some form of special achievement.

Just another republican non-issue with a delicious dash of sadism.

So, you are good with kids being recognized just for merely completing a season of a sport?
Sure. If they completed the season competing for their Alma Matter, why would they not get their letter. That's a far cry from being given a participation trophy for losing. The letter represents having fulfilled your commitment to your team, and school.

I agree, but in the end it is just a participation award.

I wonder how you all feel about finisher medals that most marathons give out if you finish

usually the winner gets something more. and the top whatever % as well.

The issue is when everyone gets something similar to the winners, not when participants are recognized with something.

That is the real concept of the "participation trophy"

When you consider how many students don't participate in any sports at all, completing an entire season is worthy of recognition.

The thread is irrelevant in that it doesn't mention that the participation awards most people are against, are those given purely based on identity. Of course those participating in a season of sport should get letters. But awards should not be freely given out based on race ethnicity, or gender. Those are the types of awards people have issues with.
