Under international laws of the early 20C the LoN granted sovereignty of their lands to various groups
The vast majority of this land was given to arab muslim concerns from outside the area.
The LoN apportioned less than 1% of the land as the Jewish national home which the then leader of the arab world accepted.
The arab muslims from outside the lands were granted the same rights to citizenship as the Jews, and still have the same rules today.

So were are these European colonists then, as last I heard a sovereign nation can pick and choose who it allows to be a citizen

That East Jerusalem was Jewish owned prior to 1948 and the Palestinians forcibly evicted the Jews from their land and property.
