Oxycodine vs. Oxycodone

I've broken multiple bones, and never did I get Dilaudid for that. Just Vicodin or Tylenol #3.

Trust me - a broken bone, which I have broke three, is childs play compared to a Grand Mal Kidney Stone...a mere tickle. Child birth?...nope. Just ask any woman who has endured both...a Grand Mal kidney stone is far worse than child birth.

My son gets kidney stones, and I know it's from too much Mountain Dew. That stuff is bad for you. He has never taken "hard" drugs for it. He gets Vicodin.

OxyContin Abuse & Addiction Withdrawals, Signs, Symptoms & Effects - Acadiana Addiction Center

OxyContin, the brand name for the drug oxycodone, is a potent synthetic opiate painkiller that is commonly prescribed for individuals who are struggling with moderate-to-severe pain. OxyContin is a lifeline for individuals who are struggling with chronic pain that occurs with some types of cancer, bone pain, heart attack, and severe burns. The time-release formulation provides hours upon hours of continuous pain relief for individuals in unremitting pain. Oxycodone, a Schedule II narcotic, is available only through a prescription from a physician for pain management. Unfortunately, a significant amount of Oxy is diverted and sold on the street.

Similar to heroin, oxycodone produces – along with pain management – a euphoric high caused by stimulation of the reward center of the brain. Oxycodone elevates levels of the neurotransmitter dopamine, which is considered the pleasure chemical of the brain. On the street, OxyContin is known as “Oxy,” “OC,” “OxyCotton,” “Hillbilly Heroin,” and “Kickers,” and is often used if heroin or morphine is not available.

Individuals who abuse “hillbilly heroin,” usually do so in one of three manners. They will crush the pill into a fine powder before snorting it, they will chew it, or they will crush the tablet and dissolve the powder into water before IV injection. These methods were once able to defeat the extended-release coating on the pills. These methods can drastically increase the risk for overdose on OC. As of September 2013, Oxy was reformulated to make crushing the tablets a challenge to discourage the abuse of this potent narcotic.

Many individuals who abuse Oxy also abuse other substances. Some will opt to combine OC with other downers such as benzodiazepines or alcohol to further the high. This combination can be particularly deadly as all downers lead to respiratory depression, and the combination can cause death. Some individuals use Oxy with stimulants such as amphetamines, cocaine, and meth in order to subdue the unpleasant side effects of stimulant abuse. This combination can lead to consequences such as heart attack and stroke.

OxyContin is a wonderful medication if used in the right way for the right period of time. However, if an individual becomes hooked on OxyContin, a hard road of tolerance, addiction, and rehab lies ahead.

You bet, soda is a key contributor to stones.
And he most likely had "hard" drugs in the Hospital when he went. They don't inject Vicodin.
Kidney Stones are different for everyone, I had 14..some I didn't know I even had until I am peeing and "Klink!" it hits the urinal at work. :D
Others were just moderate pain. Of the 14, thank goodness, only two were the super-duper pain inducers.
Like I said, when your laying in the emergency room parking lot, unable to walk, with vomit all around you - you need something just a wee bit strong.
I wish you knew me, you would see I am one of those people that don't give up. I work through pain everyday. I don't take any anti-arthritic meds, no tylenol and no ibuprofen daily. Not good for you. I learn to deal with it. But sometimes it gets the best of even me.

I don't know what they gave him in the hospital. He's only gone like two times. Thankfully, he hasn't seem to have had a problem lately. I've been trying to gently suggest that he stop drinking that Mountain Dew, but of course he is young and thinks he's invincible. Kids. They are annoying. Lol.

They do grow up...eventually...
My 25 year old is doing so good. She is a lovely person...really is. And doing well for herself. She is a Respiratory Therapist.
My son is 21...now...he is still more in the "I am invincible" mode still :D He is doing very well in college...but still drives us nuts from time to time. But....better person than I was at that age for sure.

I do hope you find something that works for you. Sorry for your pain. :(

How many of you are hooked on opiates?

I am guessing Butthead is based on his crazy posts, but who else is?

Right! Crushing pain so bad it makes a strong man have to crawl on the floor and think long and hard about attempting to get out of bed.

My guess is that you think serious chronic pain is a myth. Just an excuse to get high.. right?

I take enough morphine daily to knock you on your ass but how it works if your mind is already reeling from pain is it just tempers the suffering and has little to no cognitive impairment.

I rebuilt a c6 trans for my recently purchased 95 f250 4x4 this last fall. I couldn't have even considered a physical task such as that without help from pain meds. My driving isn't impaired at all. The only effect I am aware of is I am slightly more forgetful under the influence of the pain meds. I believe it is an acceptable trade off considering the alternative. If your life revolves around dealing with crippling pain as mine does the thought of being Hooked is the least of your worries. Not everyone is a candidate for back surgery or corrections in the hip bone to relieve arthritic degenerative bone openings for the sciatic nerves that run down the leg. The pain is similar to passing kidney stones except it never goes away. Throw in the effects of type II diabetes causing excruciating pain in the feet and a once strong and proud man is relegate to patching up his capabilities with some prescribed drugs. It's no joke.

Damn straight.
Let's see how many people go through years of RA by "toughing it out".
My recent flare up was in my right hip. And like you say - THE.PAIN.NEVER.STOPS.
That is the true crippling part of RA, during flare ups - your talking hundreds of hours of nonstop pain. Lying down does not help, no sitting position helps...tylenol, Aleve - you can take dozens in a day - nothing.
Only opiods help sometimes.
I have thought a lot about our ancestors....what did they do when they had no access to pain meds?

Sorry to hear about that. :( A whole lot of people abuse pain medications though. A lot of people take them when they aren't really necessary too just because they want to be "high."
Let's not forget the F-ing doctors who gladly and freely prescribe opiates hooking their patients.

My cousin underwent back surgery and it did not go well. She was in persistent pain for over a year and she got hooked. Her life now is a terrible mess two years later. She can't work, her home is about to be foreclosed, and her longtime partner left her. This is a woman who worked hard all her life with a huge caring heart. She cared for many ailing relatives in our family.

Opiates and doctors are dangerous.

What's the difference?
Oxycontin makes me puke...

It does a lot of people. I can take without any ill effects, other than becoming a gripe-head when coming down from them.
I use to have a lot of migraine headaches, it does well for that.
I have RA now, I occasionally take one or two during flare ups.
That's when I take mine....I've had the same script bottle for almost a year..
I take one vicodin at night about 2 hours before I go to bed. I can handle the flare ups during the day (massaging with bagbalm helps, and lots of ace bandages for support) but at night? I wanna sleep...not ache.

And maybe I'm weird, but I chew my vicodin pill. Like it's a small candy. Then shovel some chips in my mouth and drink water so I don't get a stomach ache. The taste of the pill does not bother me, thouhh.

Sadly not every surgery is successful and pain meds are almost never prescribed with the intent on setting a patient up for more than a few weeks of recovery. The core problem seems from this very uninformed outside perspective is that the surgery was il advised and possibly botched.

My case was different in that I had gone to several experts in pain management including the University of Washington with no prescriptions of any opiates applied. It wasn't even an option. After two years of attempted failed physical therapy regimens and several mri guided injections of steroids I was deemed inoperable and beyond the help of non opioid medication treatments. With that foundation and a well documented chronic pain diagnosis specialists in actual pain med supervision can treat a patient very cautiously with drugs such as methadone and morphine dialing in the most minimum doses that help pain management enough to allow the patient mobility. Just writing scripts and allowing the patient to self medicate til the script runs out and refilling it "as needed" can only lead to disaster. My paid medications have continuously been closely monitored. I am very satisfied and thankful for the mobility allowed by the meds I take which is going on the third year of major opiate treatment and close supervision.

My husband was prescribed 50 oxycontins for his surgery to reattach his bicep. That seems like a huge amount to me.

Most doctors don't do that shit. Some do, of course. A lot of times people abuse the medication all on their own with no help from the doctor. The doctor prescribes them a certain amount, and they abuse it. They are always warned to take it AS DIRECTED.

Meh, I can't take you seriously. Lol. Besides, my son drinks a LOT of Mountain Dew.
