You do have to be careful of international test scores. The first point is, what's the point to a test?

Most countries have an outdated education system.

China certainly does. I've seen Chinese kids try and do the US SAT exam, they math they can ace, simple as, the essay, they don't know enough stuff to be able to write the test. You have to back it up with information about different people, books, history or whatever, but they just don't know stuff and struggle to make a decent argument.

A modern education system should be teaching the skills that present day students will need in the workplace in the future. This isn't happening. Not in China, not much in the US, in some places in Europe it's happening to a certain extent.

To get politicians to pull their heads out of their a******s would take a lot, too much on this subject. The right, as you can see by looking at this forum, have no interest in education educating the lower masses to more than McDonald's pour the fries here and the shake there sort of education levels. They want private education to be much, much better because their kids are going to these schools.
Also there seems to be this thing that too many teachers are liberal, hardly surprising when you consider it is EDUCATION, but still, it's all a game for them and the OUTCOMES are not important, gaining a political advantage is.

I'm not saying those on the left don't do this either, the education is in a mess for a reason, however I'm going to bet it's better in Democratic states than Republican.

The average rate for Graduates taking SATs is 46%. A pathetically low number.

Look at the statistics is quite hard. Because Iowa, for example has a high score, but a VERY low number of people taking the SATs. So it's almost impossible to compare states.

Money plays a part. The more money your parents earn, the better chance you have of passing the test which is probably why white kids do better than black too.

I can't find states for the number of students who go to college each year, there might be a pattern there.

However there seem to be a lot of statistics that don't tell you very much, and if politicians are reading such statistics, they're clearly looking in the wrong places anyway.
