Standing as one of the nation's most vocal politicians for gun control, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg downplayed the "vastly overrated" power of one of the nation's most prominent gun-lobbying groups on Sunday.

In the wake of the Newtown, Conn. school shooting, Bloomberg appeared on NBC's "Meet The Press," addressing the notion that the National Rifle Association (NRA) has kept officials from taking action on the guns issue.

"The NRA's number one objective this time was to defeat Barack Obama for a second term," he said. "Last time I checked the election results, he won and he won comfortably. This myth that the NRA can destroy political careers is just not true."

The mayor's "Meet The Press" comments coincided with the decision made by 31 pro-gun rights lawmakers' to decline an appearance on the same show.

"We reached out to all 31 pro-gun rights senators in the new Congress to invite them on the program to share their views on the subject this morning," host David Gregory said. "We had no takers."

"Meet The Press" did not release a list of the names of those elected officials. But the show did tell The Huffington Post that the group was comprised of 113th Congress members who were given an "A" rating by gun groups -- specifically the NRA and Gun Owners Of America.

I totally agree with that, their records of winning in elections isn't that great and that is why I don't understand why most politicians are scared of them. We're long overdue for stricter gun laws in this Country, these mass murder shootings are coming a bit too often and it's sickening and very cowardly in the facts they shoot unarmed folks and kill themselves in the end.

oh yeah... we're long overdue for federal action that'll do absolutely nothing to fix the problem... but will in the meantime take away the rights of legitimate gun owners... seen that before...

It isn't the NRA causing him problems; it's the USSC and the US Constitution. And the power of either of those makes his look pretty pathetic.

Besides the hyperbole where have you seen this before, where legitimate gun owners lost their guns?

Yanno..........................we've seen that Grover Norquist is losing power because of his pledge to not raise taxes.

Good to see that the NRA is going the way of the Grover.

and?

well, there can't be no solutions if you and yours cut off all discussion as "trying to take [our] guns".

the solution from the gun nuts is always arm more people... get bigger weapons...

blow 'em up real good.

I think the problem is, the Democrats saw how Al Gore lost states Clinton won in 1996 in 2000, and concluded - wrongly - that Clinton's anti-gun policies cost them the election.

KY, TN, FL, LA, AR, MO, AZ, NV, WV- all carried by Clinton and lost by Gore and by Kerry.

Al Gore didn't carry his home state of TN, and democrats concluded that Clinton's gun positions (where he badmouthed the NRA, but didn't really propose anything after 1994) hurt him. So they've run from gun control like a scalded cat since.

Of course, what cost Gore those states was-

1) He ran a lame, uninspired campaign.
2) Clinton's scandals had a wearing effect.
3) Ross Perot wasn't splitting the oppossition vote.
4) Ralph Nader was splitting the progressive vote.

and yeah, maybe after those four things.

Obama has the luxury of never having to run again, but if he's going to take on the NRA, he needs real specific proposals, and he needs to avoid demonizing gun owners.

Most sensible gun owners don't want a Lanza or a Holmes walking around with guns, either.
