My take on the what the Founding Fathers had in mind in regard to the 2nd Amendment

The bible states that we should stone women who commit adultry. Do we follow that practice? No, because 2000 years ago was a very different time than now and society realizes this.

And that's why IN OUR SOCIETY we need to outlaw automatic weapons that are intended for mass destruction

Our government has unmanned drones that can wipe out a town in a matter of seconds and you think your AR-15 is going to give you the upper hand? Come on. Our government is no where close to being a tyranny or a dictatorship. We have so many checks and balances to protect itself from that. It's time for reasonable, common sense gun control. Without it, we are doomed to repeat Sandy Hook over and over again.

Too bad there isn't evidence to prove what you just said.

What are some characteristics of a tyrannical government in your eyes?

One of the most advanced fighting tools in the arms locker during the period of our Founding Fathers was the naval fighting vessel.

Many such vessels were privately owned and contracted out by our government to fight their battles for them. These were known as "privateers".

Things of changed a great deal..

Indeed they have but the principle behind the idea still stands

Interesting take on bearing "arms" to include swords and other nonexplosive devices. Another aspect that seems to be frequently overlooked is that the first ten Amendments (Bill of Rights) was written as a limitation on federal power only. The implication is that States were individually empowered to defend themselves against any external threats.

also keep in mind that the Framers considered the federal government a potential external threat to the individual states and their citizens...

Granted, our situation isn't quite to the point where the government is tyrannical or dictatorial...

but who's to say how things will look, say, 50 years hence...

would you gladly have your grandchildren wish that you hadn't banned the means for them to effectively take arms against an onerously oppressive government...?

eta: btw, I'm all for whatever means may be available to keep guns out of the hands of crazy people... as well as keeping guns out of the households wherein crazy people live...

eta: the ragheads in bumbfuckistan were able to keep the US military at bay... I 'spect a home-grown insurrection would be able to do at least as well as those camel jockeys... 'specially considering that many people in the US military would refuse to take arms against US citizens if it came to that...

The Government acts tyrannical all the time.

true... but there are degrees of tyranny...

we're not quite to the point where the government is fuckin' crazy-ass tyrannical...

Well, we've displayed those characteristics often. I guess we pause often enough or don't do them all at once so people are chilled
