Motor Trend Car of the Year

Big fat hairy deal.

Past "winners" include...

1960 Chevrolet Corvair
1963 American Motors (AMC) Rambler (all models: American, Classic, and Ambassador)
1971 Chevrolet Vega
1972 Citroën SM (an imported vehicle that was selected overall "Car of the Year")
1974 Ford Mustang II
1978 Chrysler, Dodge Omni and Plymouth Horizon
1980 Chevrolet Citation
1981 Chrysler K Cars, Dodge Aries and Plymouth Reliant
1983 AMC / Renault Alliance

Though the list of crappy cars goes on and on, you get the idea.

Pffffft.

My favorite is the 2002 Thunderbird, which is such a great car they stopped selling it after 3 years.

Notice the attack on the messenger (Motor Trend). Whenever the wackadoodles hear anything which conflicts with their biases they always attack the source.

"To be eligible for the award, a car must be an "all-new" or "substantially upgraded" vehicle that has been on sale within 12 months from the previous November, vehicles that have been on sale for over five years are ineligible for the award).[9] In recent years, each contender is ranked in the following three areas: superiority, significance, and value.[9] It is not a comparison test.[9]

"Vehicles are subjected a battery of tests: standard car tests such as skid-pad ratings, acceleration and quarter-mile times, and evaluations of the interiors are combined with a track run conducted by SCCA-licensed testers and taking the cars out on normal roads to test their drivability under normal conditions, and fuel economy. Trucks and SUVs add towing capacity and speed, plus an off-road course, to the normal regimen."

Not cherry picked list of Cars of the Year is also listed in the above link.

It is no more an attack on the messenger to point out how flawed the award is that it is to point out that the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to the most warmongering president in history.

Any of you wackadoddles ever driven an all electric car (or even a hybrid)?

I don't understand the animosity of the wackadoddles to new technology and American engineering.

Anyone that has ever driven a bumper car has driven an electric car. That list probably encompasses 90% of the posters on this board.

It's disturbing that there are no Volvos on the list, except for the 2003 Volvo XC90 in the Sport/Utility of the Year category.

I would have expected to see a 240 from the 1980s and a 740 or 850 or 960 from the 1990s. There's not even an S60 from the 2000s, and they have been a huge success with glowing reviews.

LMAO, I so wanted to put this thread in the flame zone and name names.

Motor Trend Car of the Year Surprise - Yahoo! News

i bet they don't let "Top Gear" test drive it.
I bet "Top Gear" loves it.

Apparently you don't watch the show. Tesla sued "Top Gear" after they said the Roadster broke on the show, and that it had a range of about 55 miles. Even under the overly biased slander laws in the UK that lawsuit was thrown out.

The Car of the Year award isn't based on how good a car is, it is based on how much of the car is different from the previous model year. Volvo never won because they found something that worked, and stuck with it.

An electric car that I can't afford and wouldn't get me across town it I could. What a shocker.
It's more than 160 miles across town for you? Where do you live?

The Tesla Roadster had a range of about 55 miles if you drove it like a real sports car, and that was according to Tesla engineers.
Are you able to drive it like a real sports car in rush hour traffic?

I think it would last to work and back.

If that is true, then Volvos would not win, as you say. You can take the door off the 1981 240 and put it on the 1991 240. :)

The Roadster is supposed to be a sports car with a range of 245 miles, you don't drive sports cars in rush hour traffic.

Emphasis in the original.

As with all of our OTY contests, Car of the Year is not a comparison test. It’s open only to all-new or substantially upgraded vehicles that have gone on sale in the 12 months from November 1, 2007. We do not revisit vehicles that have been on sale for the past five years.

It's a hike to anywhere but that's not the point. The issue is and always has been the viability of electric cars as mainstream transportation. In order for that to happen they have to be able to perform the tasks required by drivers. And that is a lot more than going to work.

I am waiting for the near future when people will have highly efficient transpo for daily commutes, and fun vehicles for living, be it a truck, an SUV, a minivan, a sportscar. A good, inexpensive hybrid is practically here now.

Hey...Vega wasn't a crappy car. At least, that is, when it had a 307 V8 in it. Those are fun.
