Speaking on Sunday at a memorial service for EOKA hero Gregoris Afxentiou, the Minister said that the time has finally come to move forward with consensus and patriotic responsibility and leave aside any differences we might have. It is time he said to shift from words to deeds and join forces with unity for the common struggle for a solution.

The Minister said that we must succeed the soonest and under the least possible compromises to see our country free from occupying forces, reunited and prosperous, with every legal citizen being able to enjoy his or her rights as a European citizen . These rights, he went on to say, do not apply because of the continuous Turkish occupation.

He also said that we all bear a historic responsibility towards the future generations of Greeks in Cyprus. Nicolaou also said that we need to take lessons from mistakes of the past and redefine our strategy, pointing out that it is not expected or wise to have disagreements. He called on everyone to show unity and consensus saying that trying to create impressions can be harmful for the negotiations.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. President of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci have been engaged in UN-backed talks since May 2015 with an aim to reunify the island under a federal roof.

Akinci walked away earlier this month from a meeting, in the framework of the peace talks, shortly after it began because of an amendment passed by the Cypriot Parliament which includes a once a year discussion of ten minutes in school classrooms about the 1950 referendum held in Cyprus, which favored back then a union (or `enosis` in the Greek language) with Greece.

President Anastasiades has described the House amendment "wrong" and called on Akinci to return to the negotiating table. Akinci demands that the amendment of the Cypriot Parliament is revoked before returning to the negotiating table.

Just 10 minutes a year and ONLY on the referendum.

This is an interesting opinion piece that is worth the read:

So are you for or against Cyprus unification? Youve posted two sources one for and one against, and no opinion of your own other than that it's "interesting"
