International outcry over Mohamed Morsi death sentence

Morsi ran as a candidate and won in a fair and free election.

American's are always spouting off to other people about spreading Democracy around the world.

But when the citizens in other countries freely elect people the Americans don't like or agree with.

Then the US will back the overthrow of the democratically elected official and help install another brutal dictator.

Morsi is just another victim of America's hypocritical foreign policy. .....

The people applauding this are ignoring the horrific human rights abuses conducted under the new regime
. Dissidents - not just MB, but pro-democracy activists, opposing political parties, media and journalists trying to report what's going are "disappeared", jailed, tortured or given the death penalty and some how all this is "better" than Morsi because it's not the MB.

A democratic political process put Morsi into power. We supposedly support the expansion of democracy. Good or bad, he was his people's choice. There should have been a political process to oust him. The military should have immediately held new elections. Instead - we have kangaroo courts and summary executions. It's barbaric and unreal but folks are celebrating it not because most of the convicted are murderers, or any of the normal sorts of things the death penalty is used for but because they are dissedents.

You won't understand till you stop thinking of human rights in only western terms. Not everyone's court system wants to wait years for sentencing. Jails have no place for keeping people around for years of retrials and appeals. Judgements are concerned for the state and people not for those found guilty.

We have seen how justice is carried out from Iran to gaza to SA. They are lucky to get a trial and you expect years or decades of appeals tying up the courts and jails? The middle east is not the US or even the west. The rest of the world does not apply US laws and human rights of the west, because they can't and/or culturally don't believe in them. Look at it from their own perceptive before judging. They are serving justice in a way their people understand even if the west does not always.

In case you don't understand, egypt jails can pack people into a small cell like sardines. Many have to sleep sitting up as there is no way to lay down. Not that far removed from jails in el savador, nigeria, pakistan, india or indonesia.

How does this justify rounding up, jailing and executing innocent people? And it's not just people in the West complaining - it's Egyptions themselves.

They are executed after trial. Years of appeals are not part of the justice system.
You can't expect the middle east to be like the US. Their traditions are older and they are newer at statehood. Western ideas are considered weak. US give the power to the accused nit the victim. In the middle the accused are not give as much leeway. It was not that long ago when western justice was a swift, if they were given a trail at all.

Why are they being applauded for this - by westerners then?

I understand the differences - I don't understand why westerners are applauding such barbarity and injustice on the one hand, while condemning the Morsi administration's behavior on the other. Shouldn't such things as injustice, wrongful imprisonment, corruption be condemned? People within many of those countries fight to change it.

The german juden were trying to turn their country into a zionist shithole.

Hitler stepped in to try and save Germany and all of Europe.

But unfortunately he failed and now the world suffers. ......

Actually what the world is now suffering from is Islamic savages and their ISIS loving brethren like you that are hiding out in Western countries.

LOL......... I was born and raised in America.

Roudy, you are the one who is hiding out in the US. .......
Who gives a shit where you were born, homegrown. You're the radical Islamist who wants the US to live under Shariah law and men to be allowed to marry four wives. Not to mention you openly supported ISIS on these boards. I have no reason to be "in hiding" unlike you.

would you rather we all send troops to fight them in the streets and have more collateral damage? Or is it better to let the local government show that terror will not be accepted?

I would invite them for some tea and cookies.

And then inform the agents about your subversive activities on behalf of a foreign government, Roudy. .......
Would that be before or after they handcuff you and read you your rights?

I feel that they should have just given him a life sentence. If they execute him, there will be so much trouble from the Muslim Brotherhood and other Muslims.

The European Union has denounced the death sentence handed down against Egypt's ousted president Mohamed Morsi and at least 100 others, noting the penalty stemmed from a flawed trial.

"The court decision to seek the death penalty... was taken at the end of a mass trial that was not in line with Egypt's obligations under international law," said the EU's top diplomat Federica Mogherini on Sunday (local time) in a statement.

She added that Egypt has to guarantee defendants' rights to a fair trial and to an independent investigation. Her statement said the EU believes the sentence will be revised upon appeal.

"The EU opposes capital punishment under all circumstances," Mogherini said. "The death penalty is cruel and inhumane."

At least he has time to think about it.

Well, Egypt has returned to a military dictatorship after a short flirtation with democracy. It seems that the election losers will ask the Army to step in and overturn the election thinking that they, the losers, will win the next election. Instead there is a fake election a military dictator is installed and stays there for the next few decades. What's hilarious is the same people who wanted the democratically elected leadership overthrown are now complaining about the new military dictatorship. Unbelievable.

"CAIRO, Feb 23 (Reuters) - An Egyptian court sentenced a prominent activist to five years in jail on Monday for violating limits on demonstrations, amid one of the toughest crackdowns on dissent in Egypt's history.

After the verdict was read, chants of "Down, down with military rule!" rang out in the crowded courtroom from supporters of Alaa Abdel Fattah, a leading secular figure in the 2011 revolt that toppled autocrat Hosni Mubarak.

The blogger and software engineer was originally sentenced in absentia to 15 years in jail, along with 24 others......"
