If this is true, Panetta should resign

There's more to this story. Looks like someone wanted Panetta dead. This was an assassination attempt. It is very strange that he would disarm Marines who are there to protect him. So there's probably even more to this story.

Panetta Is Safe After Breach Near His Plane at Afghan Base

A tense visit to Afghanistan by Defense Secretary Leon E. Panetta got off to an unscripted start when a stolen truck sped onto a runway ramp at the British military airfield as his plane was landing. Mr. Panetta was unhurt, but Pentagon officials said the Afghan driver emerged from the vehicle in flames.

No explosives were found on the Afghan national or in the truck, the officials said, and the Pentagon was so far not considering the episode an attack on Mr. Panetta. But it reinforced the lack of security in Afghanistan at the start of his visit, the first by a senior member of the Obama administration since an American soldier reportedly killed 16 Afghan civilians, mostly children and women, in Kandahar Province in southern Afghanistan. The two-day trip, unannounced as usual for security reasons, had been planned months ago, but has taken on a new urgency since the Sunday massacre.

Once upon a time a fucking Iraqi journalist threw shoes at a sitting President of the United States during a state visit!

I kid you not.

The notion that someone might grab a weapon is hardly the biggest stretch in the world.

Looks like this was an assassination attempt. But i'm sure there's more to the story. Disarming Marines who are there to protect you, does seem very odd.

I would agree that there is probably more to this story.

I'm glad he's safe. I don't much care (politically) for anyone in the current Administration, but I want them voted out.

I don't think Afghans care much about what we want here in the States. This would-be assassin was an Afghan Citizen.

No shit. A nominal ally.

And if a MAJOR in the U.S. Army can open up on our own soldiers here at a military base in the United States, then it is not outside the scope of possibility that some intel pointed to the possibility of a wider conspiracy against Panetta.

In either event, I'm glad he's safe. I don't imagine that we are going to be informed as to the "rest of the story," necessarily.

Once again, when was the last time someone stole a Marine's weapon and hurt anyone with it?

I'll wait.

That's actually a very good question.

That was a psycho who used his OWN weapon, in a mess hall, on unarmed people.

That is not the same as some little turd grabbing a weapon from an armed Marine escort and shooting them or the guys they're protecting.

Try again.

Someone, an Afghan civilian, stole a vehicle and crashed it as Panetta was landing; I do not believe Marines are IMMUNE to danger. 23.3% of casualties in Afghanistan have been Marines, though the Marines make up only 10% of the US forces.
