How to repair America's broken education system

It can't be fixed until parents are allowed the freedom to choose how and where their children will be educated. Until that happens, American kids will continue to be stuffed into the Government-run School Meat Grinder. There's very little hope at this point. We will continue to fall in education.

Classes that are a waste of time like world history, american history, economics, civics, etc aren't going to help produce students with problem solving skills but it will help them become little flag waving patriots who can't think for themselves.

This is how to fix America's broken education system.

The first thing you do, is to make people who want to be teachers go and get a PhD degree in Education, and a PhD in SPECIAL EDUCATION (so that they can teach anybody).
And a PhD in the field they want to be specialists in teaching.

The second thing that you do is get control of the classrooms.

The female teachers wear Pant or Skirt Suits, makeup, heels and Hose.
The male teachers wear shoes, and a suit and tie and button down dress shirt.
The students dress the same way.

And have Three teachers per 12 students in each class, Plus a liaison officer dressed like a drill sergeant, to keep order.

No more backpacks.
No more bringing ANYTHING to school OTHER THAN Books, Pencils and Gym Clothes.
No more computers to do school work with and no more calculators.
No more games in the classroom.
No more playground equipment, no more commercial gym equipment and no more pools in school.

The curriculum is...
Math, Science, History, Geography, Civics, Psychology, English, German, Dutch, French, Spanish, Portuguese, and Italian languages, Health, Gym, Home Economics, Woodshop, Industrial Shop, Driver's Education, Art and Music and Performing Arts.

No more "social studies"... it is now Geography, Civics, History, Psychology and Health in separate subjects.

No more just "science" it is divided into Biology and Life Sciences, Geology, Natural History and Evolution, and then Industrial Sciences and Physics.

That's just part of how to fix it.

School uniforms under your vision of "fixing" it.

THREE PhDs? Wow. Not only will they be 40 years old before getting into a classroom.... they'll be half a million dollars in debt. GREAT idea.

I agree with the sentiment of this idea, but in practicality, this one's a dud. Those teachers who are already half a million dollars in debt now need a $3500 wardrobe to allowed into class. Then you figure out the dropout rate for the kids who can't or won't meet the dress code.

And have Three teachers per 12 students in each class, Plus a liaison officer dressed like a drill sergeant, to keep order.

1 teacher for every 4 kids. Damn. Either every city's education budget just we think through the roof to orbit Mars or you're not paying these folks anything. Tough to pay back that half million dollar student loan.

No more backpacks.

This one sounds good but is impractical. I agree with removing the non-educational tools from everyone, and the tech from primary schools. High school students need to learn how the real world works. Nobody does math by hand anymore. Not even engineers. Get over it. Before the physical education equipment goes, the interscholastic sports programs need to go.

You started out so well here, then you hit Psych and fell off the tracks. This is America. We speak English. Hopefully Trump will make anything else being spoken a Felony. Shop, Art and things,of that sort need to be elective, not mandatory.

No more "social studies"... it is now Geography, Civics, History, Psychology and Health in separate subjects.

No more just "science" it is divided into Biology and Life Sciences, Geology, Natural History and Evolution, and then Industrial Sciences and Physics.

I agree with the specificity of topic, but Psych does not belong. Nor do Evolution or Industrial Science. Any science past the basics should be OPTIONAL.

they need to KNOW math.
School is about making BRAINS work.
They don't need to go to school to learn how to operate a calculator.
The job they grow up to do can teach them that easily.

School is about making BRAINS work.

No. Elementary school, maybe through about grade 7 or 8 is about making good brains work and teaching basic skills.

Late middle school and high school (grades 8-12) is about preparing young people for the world. Either for college or to move into their career field.

College is about preparing people for more advanced careers.

and to go to college they need to be prepared for that.
They don't need a calculator they need math lessons and practice.
There are many ways they can learn to use a calculator.
Including the woodshop or industrial shop or the computer lab or science lab.
K-to12 isn't about preparing people for the world.
Its about preparing them to be educated in the world and to accept higher levels of education.

I work in a technical field. An engineering field. I haven't done long hand math in twenty years. We have accepted rules for running conduit and poles so we don't have to do pulling or cable tension calculations. If we did have to do them, we have software for that.

Young people need to understand basic math, and how to find the proper tools to solve more complex problems.

Always some asshole who doesn't know shit about education, but has a computer and a big mouth...^^^^^^

This is exactly why each state should have autonomy in setting educational standards and methods.

No they need to how to solve complex problems, THEN take the easier way when they have the right to and an opportunity.
We don't produce robots for your employer.
We produce educated people.

President elect Trump already said it: Drain the swamp, baby.

Funny how the company I work for places more faith in me (a CAD Operator) than its Electrical Distribution Designers (Electric. Engineers) when it comes to the design of conventional underground systems. You know why? 16 years of experience and basic common sense trump any equation. Quite often the Real World humbles Math.
