Zone1 Freed slave Booker T Washington became one of the greatest Americans WITHOUT reparations.

Any advocate for slavery "reparations" should read about the life of Booker T Washington. Happy New Year everyone!

.

He did it with the work and the will of his own mind. I loved reading and learning about him in grade school and high school. I always admired educators.

Happy New Year to you as well.

Dr. Booker T. Washington would probably be ashamed of a large percentage of his people today.

After the Civil War, he assumed that the newly freed people would learn a skill and be productive members of society.

If he could see how many of the younger (and not so young) ones act today, he would probably be dejected.

(And no doubt so would Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.)

Yes he worked his way through Hampton Institute and then the treasurer of the school gave him a loan to by an old plantation to start his own school. His students built a kiln, fired their own bricks and built what would become Tuskegee Institute.

Not only Booker T Washington but thousands upon thousands of black people who overcame whatever handicaps or roadblocks could have hindered them and became educated, productive, prosperous, commendable U.S. citizens that anybody would be proud to have as neighbor or friend or colleague.

The worst form of racism now is that which assumes black people are perpetual victims and therefore entitled to special accommodations or protection. The progressives not only destroyed many beneficial black institutions (in the name of desegregation) but have destroyed the black family and convinced a generation of people that they are victims and entitled because it is 'whitey' keeping them down. I will allow that there may have been some good intentions with very bad consequences in there. But mostly it has been due to pandering to keep black people as an important voting constituency for the progressives.

Any black person who strays off their 'plantation' will be excoriated and demonized. Black person are expected to 'speak for their race', are expected to be angry and entitled, are expected to 'be a credit to their race.' The people pushing that, and that would almost universally be bleeding heart progressive 'do-gooders' whatever their skin color, are the most racist people in America today.

Well said. The entire narrative of Black victimhood is crippling and perpetuated purely for political purposes by the Democrats.

Perhaps the Smithsonian would have taken more notice of him if he'd have had reparation. Didn't even make the top 100 as it is.

Oh. Uncle Booker. No wonder he's held up as an example by dog whistlers.

In 1895, Washington publicly put forth his philosophy on race relations in a speech at the Cotton States and International Exposition in Atlanta, Georgia, known as the "Atlanta Compromise." In his speech, Washington stated that African Americans should accept disenfranchisement and social segregation as long as white people allow them economic progress, educational opportunity and justice in the courts.

This fails as a strawman fallacy.

Reparations aren’t about making people ‘great.’

Reparations are about paying what’s owed to the descendants of enslaved Americans whose labor was taken from them absent just compensation.

The right’s unwarranted, meritless opposition to reparations is solely about conservatives seeking to ignore the residual effects of slavery, that descendants of enslaved Americans continue to be disadvantaged the consequences of slavery, Jim Crow, Black Codes, segregation, and Republican policies today hostile to Americans of color.

There was no policy more "hostile to Americans of color" than your President LBJ's "Great Society" legislation.

The point is Booker T proved that even an ACTUAL FREED SLAVE can achieve success in America because America rewards initiative and there are always individuals and institutions ready to lend a hand up.
