Do We Have Only 5 Years Left to Live?

Like we said who cares about climate change?

Large Asteroid Packing 50 Megatons Of Force Might Come Crashing Down On Earth In 2023 — And That’s Not All

Known as asteroid 2018 LF16, the space rock was last observed by our astronomers on June 16 — notes NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) — who calculated its orbit and its potential to become a threat to our planet. The calculations showed asteroid 2018 LF16 could collide with our planet on 62 different dates between now and 2117.

The first of these unnerving opportunities arises just five years from now — occurring on August 8, 2023. Other potential impact dates in the near future fall on August 3, 2024, and on August 1, 2025.

.

Probably a good reason to HAVE a space force huh lefties? Better stop objecting to everything Trump says without considering all the angles. Right now -- not a single thing we could do about it. No American is going near space unless they bum a ride with the Russians.

I'm surprised MindWars isn't all over this. This looks like a world killer coming in 2023.

"A large asteroid could be headed toward us in the near future — barreling through space on a risk trajectory that might cause it to collide with Earth.

The news comes from the Express, which cites NASA sources revealing that the space rock could end up engaged in not one, but a staggering 62 different potential impact trajectories with our planet — each of them waiting to sling the asteroid toward Earth over the next 100 years."

Ummmm….50 megatons isn't a world killer.

The dinosaur killer was something like 100 million megatons

This is how much damage it would do

I argued with liberals and conservatives who believe human exploration and a push to Mars is a waste.
Doesn't dawn on folks that we are one global event from mass extinction and are the first lifeform on Earth to have the ability to spread off world.
Also pointed out that many see a potential of mining these asteroids for minerals. Could be trillions out in the belt.

We could prevent disaster with enough warning by nudging a world killer just enough to miss Earth.
First off we need a cheap reliable way into Earth orbit.
Screw the wall, build the equatorial elevator...

Of all human endeavors, spreading off world will ensure our long term survival.

It's gonna wiz by pretty damn close, around 4 earth radii, but they have mapped out the orbit pretty well, and it's gonna miss.

Pretty much a city killer if a landfall, or a coastline killer if a water landing.

It's going to miss 62 times???

How many other asteroids have missed the Earth how many times?

Again read the link, this one will hit one of the pass bys in a 100 years.

About 40 million near earth orbit objects that could change the meteor's course. Never played pinball? Worse yet, a collision of that object within the solar system with the smallest of objects, could make that "4 earth radii" disappear faster than you can prepare for the end.

Orbits can change, but not by very much, or very often.

They can track out centuries with these things if they have enough observations.

One can only hope
Totally agree. If our species survives long enough to move out into other galaxies Lord help any civilization we encounter. Our history of colinization on this planet doesn’t encourage anything like optimism for the outcome. Buty hey, the may see us coming and - - - - - - -
