Nick Saban’s bold decision to play a true freshman QB backfired at the worst possible time

Dieter KurtenbachJan 10, 2017 at 4:34a ET
Before this season, Nick Saban had never played a true freshman quarterback in his long and illustrious head coaching career.

But Jalen Hurts was a different kind of player, and while he didn’t start the season as Alabama’s starting quarterback, he won the job, fair and square.

Saban looked like a genius for going with the 18-year-old Texan at times this season — Alabama’s offense thrived as it made its final step away from the power game that might as well have been the trademark of a Saban team and fully became a modern, run-first spread attack, the kind that Saban hates to defend.

The results were undeniable: Hurts became the first Saban quarterback to throw for 300 yards and rush for 100 in a game, and Alabama’s offense was one of the best and most balanced in college football. Along with that all-time defense, you could easily make the argument that the 2016 Tide was Saban’s best-ever team.

It didn’t matter that Hurts had a poor game in the College Football Playoff semifinal against Washington — the rest of the Alabama team was so good the contest was never really in question.

But Hurts had a similarly poor performance in Monday’s CFP national championship game, and it’s hard to see how it didn’t cost Alabama a second-straight national title.

Nick Saban's bold decision to play a true freshman QB backfired at the worst possible time | FOX Sports

Let me ask you one more time, which of the other Alabama QBs would have been a better choice?

I find it amusing that so many people think they know better than Saban, who is one of the best college coaches in history.

But please, tell us all which of the other Alabama QB was better than Hurts?

Why such a poor job (recruiting) of having more experienced QB on scholarship?

When you recruit over player then they move on. So, as a result, Saban had no bench to go too.

Oh, another screw up was letting Kiffin leave before the game. Shark sux

Nick Saban comments on Alabama QB transfers, their status for playoff. The news of two Alabama quarterback transfers didn't come as a major surprise this week. Cooper Bateman and David Cornwell have been in the program several years, so when a true freshman in Jalen Hurts wins the job, it almost becomes expected.Dec 8, 2016

Nick Saban comments on Alabama QB transfers, their status for playoff

Saban played the best QB he had this year. The others were not as good.

After he was hired by FAU, Kiffin was almost worthless. He even said he was distracted.

I find it hilarious that you think you know more about the Alabama football team than the head coach. Two great teams met last night, and Clemson won it in the final minutes. It was an awesome game. My team didn't win, but I am not going to try and be a monday morning QB and claim I knew it all along.

Hats off to Clemson who was clearly the better team. Saban's reliance on a true frosh bit him in the a$$

-Geaux

Clearly the better team? They were about as evenly matched as you could ask for.

And Saban relied on his best QB. But if you think going 14-1, playing for the National Championship in a very, very close game is getting bitten in the ass, ask the other 126 head coaches out there if they would trade places.

Hurts 13/31 for 131 yds is getting bit in ass

Easy now, Alabama is better than needing a moral victory. Bama was just out coached and out played. The defense just got wore down for the Tide. Conditioning will be evaluated over the off season

-Geaux

I am not worried about a moral victory. I find it amusing that you think you know better than Nick Saban who the best QB on his team was. Conditioning at Alabama is top notch. Clemson played the game of their lives. It came down to the wire.

Which of the other QBs on Alabama's team do you think would have been better?

Oh, if 13/31 for 131 yards is getting bit in the ass, what would you call 19/33 for 127 yards and 2 INTs? Because that is what the junior QB JT Barrett managed. Did Urban's choice to use a junior bite him on the ass?

Jalen Hurts ran for over 900 yards. More than all the other QBs under Saban at Alabama combined. Hurts finished the season with 31 TDs, which puts him at #2 on the single season records.

But you, in your infinite wisdom, think one of the other QBs would have done better? Which one?
Hurts is a beast. When Newton said that an object in motion tends to stay in motion, he was talking about Hurts.

Another big time Bama recruit. Saban has no concern lol

VanDarius Cowan's high school career is over, per a report from the Palm Beach (Fla.) Post.

The Alabama commit was removed from his high school team, Palm Beach Gardens. The report says that it's likely linked to behavior after being removed from a 12-10 loss early last Thursday.

I guess its time for Hurts to transfer. He filled his role and now has time for a haircut. He could pass as one of the first daughters

Maybe you could get your phone number to Saban. You know, in case he wants to ask you any questions about his players, staff or plans.

No idea what this has to do with the topic. If the kid stays with Alabama, Saban will bring him around.

Congrats to Clemson from one that bleeds it. Love my Tide no matter. Took a Bama boy to beat us. ;) Not super happy with the 2 picks, but it is what it is, but Dabo plays dirty. That surprises me a bit. Kinda sorta.

No flags like the target hit on Williams. Not sure they were illegal picks. Bama needed to adjust the spacing of their defenders

-Geaux
If they insist on using replay then it should be applied for penalties, too. The no call at the end of this game gave the national championship to Clemson just as a bad call on a punt return rewarded Colorado with the 1990 national championship. It matters.
Personally, I think replay should be ditched.

I am no expert with college football rules. Many are saying that the picks were perfectly legal. The no call by the refs and the way Clemson Players and coaches openly admit to the picks make me think that opinion is correct.
Yes, Clemson ran a ‘pick play’ to beat Alabama. But it was totally legal.

No, they're illegal but not subject to review apparently.
Here's a clip from the 1991 Orange Bowl.
At the 0:41 mark at the 31 yard line. That bad call gave Colorado the national championship.

Pick plays? Rules experts weigh in on Clemson's 2 late TDs against Alabama

If Nebraska had cheated the way Clemson did and utilized a pick instead of playing by the rules, they would have scored on their 2-point try against Miami in 1983 and would have won the national championship.

It was not an illegal pick. The Bama defender actually threw the receiver down in the path. Thus no flag

You mean the frosh who scored the go ahead TD and set up the first TD by actually running with the ball (a no-no in the lame, boring, scripted NFL)?

11 of 31 for the young man. Game over

-Geaux

The guy who is 2nd in single season TDs in the history of Alabama football? The game has just begun.

Maybe you mean the young man who ran for 114 yards and threw for 107 yards against LSU? Maybe you remember the game? Fournette rushed for a grand total of 35 yards?

Also, he is a guy who knows how to take care of the ball. Hardly ever fumbles or throws a interception, and that is a large factor in why Alabama was seconds away from being national champions again.

I disagree with that interpretation. When a player gains an advantage from a mutual contact then the penalty needs to be called.
Clemson clearly benefitted from the contact. It's a terrible way to end a game.

I disagree with that interpretation. When a player gains an advantage from a mutual contact then the penalty needs to be called. Much like basketball. Contact often occurs without a foul call unless a player gains an advantage from the contact.
