A conservative candidate is the only possibility of holding onto the republican base. Christie isn't that conservative. Republicans would either stay home in droves or vote for a third party candidate.

To Katzndogz: Christie is pretty much a media candidate. I do not think he has a chance of winning the nomination, and he certainly will not get the conservative vote in the general election. Christie aside, I’m afraid that Karl Rove’s Republicans and the media will nominate Son of Romney-McCain-Dole. Even worse, they might nominate Brother & Son of Bush. That’s why conservatives better concentrate on congressional seats.
