Well, who said Putin wanted diplomacy? He didn't. He wanted to invade, everything he's done regarding the Ukraine in the last 23 years suggests this.

NATO is no longer a defensive organization they have demonstrabley become
expansionists intent on conquest. This has not been lost on either the Russian or
