SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — An eight-foot-tall bronze statue of a late Native American leader known for preserving cultural dances now stands surrounded by trees in a historic park outside of California’s state Capitol building, replacing a statue of a Spanish missionary that protesters toppled it in 2020.

California lawmakers, tribal leaders and hundreds of others on Tuesday celebrated the unveiling of a statue depicting Miwok leader William J. Franklin, Sr., in recognition of the Native American tribes whose ancestral lands are now the grounds of the state Capitol.

“Finally, the California Indian people will have a monument here on the Capitol grounds for all those visiting to know that we are still here,” said Assembly member James C. Ramos, the first Native American in the state Legislature. “We’re here because of the resiliency of our elders and ancestors.”

One step at a time. Baby steps are still steps. Well done, Cali

In 2019, Gov. Gavin Newsom issued a formal apology for the state’s legacy of violence against Native Americans, saying it amounted to genocide.

Natives fought for their homeland. Lee fought for the land his ancestors stole from the Natives.
What's the point? Lee isn't implicated in a plot to steal land from Indians. Actually it was the federal government that stole land from Lee. American Indians are forgiven for taking arms against the federal government so why not forgive Lee?

Natives are forgiven? Seriously? Forgiven for defending our homeland? Where we lived for thousands of years? Kinda arrogant don't you think?

There isn't room for a discussion about Indian tribal warfare or the "thousands" of years of alleged peace among Aborigines in North America. Robert E. Lee wasn't implicated in the plot to subjugate American Indians but Geronimo was a prime suspect in the attempt to overthrow the government.

Pretty logical if you had an ancestor who was scalped and enslaved by Indians. Indians fought for their homeland and so did Robert E. Lee.
Indigenous people did fight for their homelands, while Lee fought against his. IMO, he should have been the day he surrendered to Grant.
