I used to volunteer for March of Dimes. Very little of their money actually goes to help kids but boy, they pay some fat salaries and go on some really fancy junkets.

Most of the money you give to the Red Cross doesn't actually help anyone.
Same for United Way. Organized charities are mostly scams/ripoffs whose donations are consumed by admin fees. Give directly to people or churches. Leave the middle man out.

I am the president of a local faith-based registered non-profit. Every single penny we receive goes directly to the people we are helping. Not many non-profits can say that.
We board member pay the overhead costs out of our own pockets, and none of us receive a salary.
We are not a national organization. We serve only the people of our immediate community, and that is what our donors like about it. They know exactly where every cent of their donations end up.
