"21"

Today, former Virginia Senator Jim Webb announced his candidacy for President as a Democrat, making him the 5th Democratic candidate and the 19th major candidate overall for the 2016 season.

Governor Scott Walker (R-WI) is announcing on July 13th. He will be the 20th major candidate for president.

Governor John Kasich (R-OH) is announcing on July 21st. He will be the 21st major candidate for president.

I strongly suspect that those will be the last two major presidential announcements, which will leave us with a field of 5 Democrats and 16 Republicans, 21 major candidate in total. Theoretically, Vice President Biden could also announce as a Democratic candidate, but he would be coming very, very late to the game and as of yet, has not formed an exploratory committee. Alone, to get such a committee up and running takes weeks and Biden also has no superpacs bringing in money right now from the outside. He would be starting with a severe disadvantage, to say the least.

It is without a doubt the most crowded Republican field in all of our Union's history, so 2016 is also setting records, even before the Primary contests begin.

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) announced on 3/23 and John Kasich is announcing on 7/21, so for all intents and purposes, we will have gotten all 21 announcements in over a circa 120 day time-span. That averages to 1 announcement every 6 days, although that is not how it happened. A number of announcements happened in a row, boom-boom-boom.

Blackjack!
