The Klan wasn't founded by any political party or any politician or anyone politically connected at all. It was founded by six bored young Confederate veteran soldiers. That Klan was extinguished by 1880 and would have been another historical footnote along with other such vigilante groups of the time including the Red Caps, White League, Men of Justice, Knights of the White Camellia and others. It was revived in 1915 by a salesman named William Simmons -- who also had no connection to politics.

By the end of that century the RP had taken on the interests of the rich and corporations and the DP had absorbed the Populist movement -- which is why it attracted, and still holds today, constituencies of blacks, women, Jews, immigrants, etc --- all those groups the KKK was directly opposed to.

And finally, CRA 1964 -- actually more Democrats than Republicans voted for it but that's not what was significant -- what was significant was the regional split. The South voted overwhelmingly against it, everywhere else voted overwhelmingly for it.
