Putin was hoping on Trump winning a second term and he would further weaken NATO and then possibly leave. Putin believed that would allow him to hoover up the Eastern European countries of the old soviet bloc.

Biden won.. Ukraine knowing they had a real ally in Biden moved to closer integration to EU and NATO... Putin got very fearful... NATO is bad but EU is way worse... EU is very accomplished at massively reducing corruption, expanding economies and make people richer... The also get substantially better quality of life and much more liberty... Things like ECJ (European Court of Justice) allows all EU citizens to effectively sue there own or other governments for not doing their job or harming them... This give EU Citizens huge power to conquer corruption...

Putin then got himself into a place that he felt he had to stop this by any means necessary, he had no Trump to try and stop this so he invaded... So Trump might be right there would have been no war if Trump was in power but that is because Trump would have done what Putin wanted anyway, why buy a cow when milk is for free... There would still be a fight in the future when Ukraine wants to join these organisations but they would be tougher and harder fights... I prefer when the US President doesn't work for the Russian President.
