Would You Remove?

In Virginia, there is a statue honoring a Confederate soldier who fought for the rebels in several major battles of the American Civil War. He was eventually killed at the Battle of Chickamauga. Would any or all here be in favor of removing this monument, given how much rancor has been generated over such things in recent years?
no

People put up monuments for many reasons. Ripping it down b/c someone is or might be offended is foolish.

What did the soldier do that earned him such a honor?

What every other soldier did that served in that war.
that doesn't get you a monument to yourself.

No, maybe it was erected to memorialize all the young men from the area. Don’t matter. Tell you what though, if we are erasing all history of the civil war, we should go head and wipeout all reference to the all black “ Buffalo Soldiers” as well since they were such hard charging Native American killers. And the term “Buffalo Soldier” is a derogatory term comparing the black mans hair to the fur of a Buffalo.

Yes. It was put up in the 1960s for racist reasons

Pictures of the statue have been posted on this thread. Look at them.

Showed remarkable courage and compassion to his enemies during a dark moment in American history.

Wrong

Where is the statue and when was it erected?

1965

Fredericksburg

I have no problem with the statue in Fredericksburg
Great battle was fought there

There are many statues in Fredericksburg
Why would they put up a statue in 1965, though? One hundred years later? Sounds like one of those intimidation tactics Pogo talks about, putting up those statues in reaction to the Civil Rights movement.
That's WAY late to be putting up statues to a "hero" who lost the war.

I don't like it. It makes a racist seem human.

Yes you are.

To remove the statue would be akin to the Taliban, Al Qaeda, and ISIS destroying ancient historical monuments.

I know the Democrats are anxious to sweep their history under the rug but like they say, "Those who don't remember the past are doomed to repeat it."
That’s the proof we need right there. Republicans love to say those racist southern democrats owned slaves but notice it’s republicans today who want to protect their statues and you who call them heroes and patriots. You must be a Democrat

No, I'm a Republican. But I'm also from the South.

The statue was erected specifically because he did not do what every other soldier did. At least read the thread, lazy shit.

It should never have been erected. Such memorials should be in dedicated facilities, privately owned.

What would sane Americans say about Nazi historical figures being similarly honored in Germany? The comparison is not that far off.

How did he get away with not lifting a finger to fight for the confederate losers? Are you saying he was just out there not doing anything?

Their Kind Have Never Changed
And all those kkk dems are now GOP. So what “kind” are you taking about, dearie?

What the hell are you talking about? Black unemployment and food stamp usage reached its highest peak while a black Democrat was President.

Have you even bothered to look at how the numbers have changed once we got a Republican in there?

He didnt come when his country called. He was with the treasonous losing traitors that got their asses kicked. I read up on him and he went on to fight more battles all in the name of thumbing his nose at the notion that all men are created equal.

Just in time to show they were pissed off by the civil rights movement.

No reason to honor treason

How does your foot taste?

How does it feel to post such a disingenuous OP? Why are all right wing threads either a blatant lie, or a misrepresentation of facts to the point of being a lie?
Was there a point unkotare was trying to prove?

So should the statue be taken down or not unkotare? And why?

Does anyone know what unkotare thinks?
the opposite of what anyone else says.

i think it's called trolling.
