They had just left a siege, Petersburg, and were forced to maneuver. They were simply out of space, resources and time.

Then I shall clarify: I meant that we typically were very rough on opponents. I didn't say it was racism. I show it as an example of what could have happened, and would more likely happen in a modern civil war.

LOL, The Russians vs. The Germans and vice versa in WWII was far rougher than anything Americans have done in their entire history.

We still actually took Japanese prisoners if we could, and treated them the same as other POWs. Neither the Germans or Russians did the same for each other, and yet the Germans played fair with Americans and the British.

Hell the Russians kept some of their POWs until the 1950's.

The ACW was uncommonly civil for a civil war.

Maybe so to a certain extent through 1863. In 1864 and 1865, the combat was brutal and would be repeated on a much larger scale 50 years later in WW1. Prisoner exchanges didn't happen much after 1863 and the prisons on both sides became uncivil at best.
