I’m not trained in martial arts, but I would definitely grab the guy from behind. I’ve thought of the same thing if a gunman entered our church during Mass and started firing. If close, I think I would tackle him, even if from the front even at the risk of being killed. If farther away, I would shout “Police officer. Drop it!” in order to distract him. I’m open to other suggestions if somebody were faced with a mass shooter.

Hey, that's a good idea! If distracted, maybe someone else with some guts will get to the shooter and put them out of their misery.

To help someone or others with a local government system that despises you for doing so is not logical. To be put through the wringer for being a "Good Samaritan" which was pushed normally until recent years, is anti-civilization.

Rather, I have made a conscious decision that I am unwilling to step in. I have done a rational cost-benefit analysis, and determined the potential cost is very high, while the potential benefit to me cannot be differentiated from zero. Thus: walk away, not my problem.

Yes. The potential cost to me is quite high, the potential benefit to me is zero. My wife has instructions to prevent me from helping by any means necessary up to and including knocking me unconscious. It took me a long time to control my impulse to help.
