I’m not trained in martial arts, but I would definitely grab the guy from behind. I’ve thought of the same thing if a gunman entered our church during Mass and started firing. If close, I think I would tackle him, even if from the front even at the risk of being killed. If farther away, I would shout “Police officer. Drop it!” in order to distract him. I’m open to other suggestions if somebody were faced with a mass shooter.

You don’t necessarily need to be trained in martial arts if you’re smart about how you handle yourself and the situation.

The natural inclination when faced with such is to hide in the hope of being overlooked. Should a mass of the potential victims, however, decide to turn and fight, the assailant would be quickly overwhelmed. He/she might get off a few shots, but if you have 10 men rushing you from 20 feet away, you're not likely to kill many, as opposed to a gunman taking his time, emptying his magazine into the crowd that's only trying to get away, then reloading and doing it again. A gunman counts on panic giving him the largest number of victims.
