The dramatic nationwide drop in private-sector union membership has lowered pay for non-union workers over the past four decades, a study released Tuesday argues.

By contrast, expanded trade with low-wage nations in recent decades is responsible for a 5 percent drop in the wages of non-college-educated workers, according to a figure cited in the paper.

The non-union women workers hit hardest by the decline of unions are also those with a high school degree or less. Non-union women with that education level would be earning $676 more in 2013 if the women’s private-sector union rate remained what it was in 1979.

There are several reasons the paper offers for why higher union membership rates would benefit workers not covered by those unions’ collective bargaining contracts. Chief among them is the fear non-union firms have that their workforce will be vulnerable to a union organizing drive if they’re paid significantly less than their unionized competitors. Cough cough bullshit. Wages have always been dictated by the market. When the economy is strong wages go up and when it is weak wages go down. In the same period that you talk about wages for almost all Americans have gone up. I just don't see that this article has any merit.
 
I like unions because it is a part of the communist dream to collectively organize all labor so that society will be forced to cooperate in one giant thing. We don't need workers working separately as individuals but they have to be organized on a large scale so that a society that is mostly composed of workers will be united and strong. It is like some kind of militeristic thing that is going on inside the minds of some people. I like unions and they should be forced on everyone in the country so we can organize labor the way we want to to do it. Fuck individual liberty because it just makes societies week and we can't have that. Of course, paraphrasing what some people might really think.
 
I personally have no problem with people who want to organize to fight bad working conditions because I've seen employers take advantage of people in a bad way but the idea that every single employee in America should belong in a union is fucking stupid. In some places workers are pretty happy where they are at and have no need to disrupt the apple cart.

Enjoy Your Day Off For Labor Day (Unless You’re A Low-Wage Worker)

The working poor are still the least likely to get paid holidays off.

Labor Day is a time to celebrate the U.S. labor movement and all its hard-won victories ― including holidays, like Labor Day itself. And yet nearly one in four workers won’t be enjoying the day off with pay on Monday.

Twenty-three percent of private-sector workers in the U.S. don’t get paid holidays off from their jobs, according to the most recent data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That’s roughly the same amount of workers who don’t get any paid vacation time.

Although most of the U.S. workforce does get paid holidays off, it’s low-wage workers who are the most likely not to. Among those in the lowest-earning quartile of workers, a little over half do not get any paid holidays. By contrast, more than 9 out of 10 workers in the highest-earning quartile do get paid holidays.

In other words, the less you’re paid to begin with, the less likely you are to spend Labor Day with your family without sacrificing a day’s pay. Just as you would be vastly less likely to be able to stay home from work while sick. Only 39 percent of workers in the bottom quartile get paid sick days, compared to 84 percent of workers in the highest.
