The Good insane United states of America
Same reason why most of western Europe has higher per capita incomes in general!!! States that are well regulated, have good infrastructure, promote education and a good business climate draws high quality people.

The south is a shit hole because government is always evil and they have low standards.

I don't know the reason but I can't figure out how those people let 5 inches of snow put a halt to things. When a snowstorm comes people run around like the end of the world is coming. Cars in the ditch everywhere. Its comical.

Maybe because voters in that state voted Republicans to clean up the democrats mess. Obviously, if voters didn't like the condition of their state, then, Republicans would be out and democrats remained in.

States who adopted Democratic Socialism Non-Marxist–Leninist doing poorly ranking

Kentucky

Kentucky – Median household income: $42,958 Poverty rate: 19.1%

Kentucky's 7.4% unemployment rate is still quite a bit higher than the rates of other states.

Vermont

Bernie Sanders own state as Senator Vermont top 10 worst economic in nation.

Rich States, Poor States, 8th Edition - American Legislative Exchange Council

Mississippi – Median household income: $39,680 Poverty rate: 21.5%

New Mexico – Median household income: $44,803 Poverty rate: 21.3%

West Virginia – Median household income: $41,059 Poverty rate: 18.3%

Arkansas – Median household income: $41,262 Poverty rate: 18.9%

Are they poor? Or is it simply much less expensive to live there.

If you make 100k a year in New York, you're poor.

If you make 100k a year in Alabama, you have a nice house, cars, probably a boat to go fishing on the weekends. And you call us dumb...that's funny.

But who makes more than 20 grand a year in any of the red states? And why do they require so much money from the blue states to keep making the welfare payments?

Well, isn't this a dishonest thread....

You're ignoring the fact that most of that has to do with the fact that Southern states are mostly rural.

A whole lot of people make more than 20 grand a year. Not sure if you noticed, but NYC alone almost has more food stamp recipients than the entire state of Alabama. It's not welfare payments that the red states as a rule benefit more from per capita (btw, if you have fewer people, it's easier to project per capita numbers higher) but energy, farm subsidies and military spending. Noticed where most of the military bases are?

Now, does this mean some red states don't benefit more? Sure they do.

Alabama, where I live has more people not working than working. A fair bit of that is retirees, but there's still a whole lot of moochers.

Mississippi...same boat.

New York...wait...New York has more people not working than working? Yep.

Surprise surprise...so does California, although they're much more likely to attract some retirees than New York.

Illinois? Yep, them too.

So you see, the problem isn't what you seem to think it is.
