True, but it's by choice rather than by law, which is why it isn't unfair. The law says you hafta pay income tax, SSA tax, sales tax, etc., but you don't have to pay the tariff tax unless you want to. And BTW, Biden and past presidents have done the same thing, it ain't only Trump. I don't support tariffs though, it's a bad idea IMHO.

Call it what you want to call it trying to duck the fact it is the genuine fair tax since it does not target any class at all. Actually a case can be made that sales targets the rich. A rich man buys a ten-million-dollar yacht and is soaked a million dollars sales tax. He carries some poor people on the yacht who paid nothing towards the purchase. Still with warts like that, I still favor sales taxes.

No other president has done like Trump and had tantrums when some foreign leaders pissed him off and imposed tariffs to punish them. We have had mostly free trade with very limited tariffs until how.
And NO other president was stupid enough to imagine exporting countries were paying the tariffs. But he makes that claim and maga believes it.

Well, Adam Smith says we should tax only luxuries and never necessities. So if your sales tax is only for luxuries, fine.

The yacht is used by both the poor and the rich. Only the rich are charged. Sales taxes are on everything. Stop saying regressive. There is nothing at all in tax law using that word.

And you're quite the idiot. Not everything has a tariff on it, people can buy domestic stuff or some other alternative. You're right about one thing though, Trump was wrong when he said the foreign exporters would pay the tariff. Imagine that, a politician that lied.

Of course the word isn't in the tax law. But it's in studies of taxes. I won't stop saying it. A sales tax, which is regressive, is a bigger burden on the poor.
I've been trying to think of a way that will help you understand that. I'm going to try another approach now.
If a poor person buys a luxury like a thousand dollar phone, we rightly say they should live within their means. Those kind of items are for people who have more money. The same goes for taxes. A sales tax is
money they have to spend and they can't keep it within their means because everyone pays the same rate. But it impacts a poor person more just as buying an expensive phone impacts a poor person more than it would impact a rich person.
Regressive taxes are just wrong, and Adam Smith knew that.

Actually, there are very few things that don't have a tariff. Even if it's domestic, the parts or materials are imported. Can you think of something that has no imported parts or materials?
What's worse than Trump lying about it is him being so stupid that he believes it. And his advisors are to scared to tell him the truth.

Why was there silence from Republicans? I don't think Biden went on rampages passing tariffs because someone made fun of him. And he certainly didn't impose those huge tariffs that Trump did and then remove them willy-nilly and threaten people with huge tariffs. Biden kept it within the law.
