State, local, city, monopolies, authorities, etc. were massively lower along with the costs of the standard of living. We were still rising nation although cracks were forming as the world reindustrialized after WW 2. The costs of building any infrastructure in comparison from then and today is a joke. And the time it takes to complete infrastructure of any kind was outstanding. The Arleigh burke Class destroyers now cost 2.5 billion dollars apiece. The two classes built in the 1950's are estimated with inflation to cost 100 million to 120 million dollars apiece. In that era, they were 10 to 15 million dollars each. And we had near balanced budgets.1950s style tax rates ar the only thing that will save us at this point.
