Another thread in this forum about when did we make the choice about religion.. Kinda got me thinking about the bigger question.. Why do we have it and do we still need it??

I can only answer for myself and as I am sure most of you know, I am not religions.. I am not one that I would say needs a religion.. Science for me has explained much of the previous unknowns.. For instance, we all know that the Sun and Moon are not gods.. We know what an eclipse is and can predict them.. We know what astroids are and we know how the weather works..

There are not really in serious mysteries for mankind.. Nothing that religions really fills in for.. So why do we have it?? Why do we need it??

What is it that religions fulfills and what purpose does it serve??

Do we as a people need it to survive or do you personally need it?? If so why??

Individuals turn to religion as a pseudo-answer to questions they cannot answer and a source of comfort when faced with their own destruction or insignificance.

Society uses religion as both a unifying factor and a means of controlling the masses.
There are not really in serious mysteries for mankind

I emphatically disagree.

There was a thread that went by the title "Is religion necessary" or along those lines.

A big fuss erupted on that thread--that is when J Beaukman would call belivers fools and some religious poster would call J B a fool and what a roe that turn into!!

To bad the atheists on this board of late are to courtesy for that to happen again!! I truly enjoyed the child-like brawls that JB would get into with believers. I found it quite amusing, to say the least!!

Fear of the unknown, death and the unexplaiinable is the main reason for religion in my opinion.

Why the right is so much into religion.

We don't need religion.

Of course, this all depends on how we define 'religion''....

I emphatically disagree.

The point there was, there are not mysteries that mankind is affraid of.. Or views as a determining factor of our survival..

My statement is true.. We are no longer affraid of an eclipse as we once were.. You can disagree.. But please qualify your disagreement?

Religion is the believing in and worshiping of a god by whatever name you want to use and putting your faith in said god in hopes of recieving a reward..

That is the only definition in modern times..

–noun 1. a set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe, esp. when considered as the creation of a superhuman agency or agencies, usually involving devotional and ritual observances, and often containing a moral code governing the conduct of human affairs.
2. a specific fundamental set of beliefs and practices generally agreed upon by a number of persons or sects: the Christian religion; the Buddhist religion.
3. the body of persons adhering to a particular set of beliefs and practices: a world council of religions.
4. the life or state of a monk, nun, etc.: to enter religion.
5. the practice of religious beliefs; ritual observance of faith.
6. something one believes in and follows devotedly; a point or matter of ethics or conscience: to make a religion of fighting prejudice.

Take your pick!! In either case we know what the definition of religion is and we all define it the same..

The opium of the optimistically deluded?

Still, do you really want to see these people go through withdrawals?

WTF are you babbling about? I can barely decode your fucking posts.

Now, when you can repost in American Standard English or some comprehensible derivation thereof, I will respond.

For now, reading your posts is like listening to George Bush and Miss Teen South Carolina speaking a the the Republican Convention.

Where to start?

To find the truth. To find true peace and joy in this life and the life to come. To recieve the blessings God has in store for us but which arae conditional upon some action on our part. To become the people we are destined to be.

What is it that religions fulfills and what purpose does it serve??

Ultimately religion exists at all because of a question which perhaps can never be answered by humans on earth, of which science is futile.

Will life continue after death, does soul exist?

You need faith for a "yes", or you need the same amount of faith for a "no". Scientifically the answer is "I don't know" yet it doesn't seem to be an option you can keep in your life time. Even when you consciously say that "I don't care about my life at all", your sub-consciousness may have already picked a "no" for you.

It is a faith question demanding a faith answer for everyone to go through in his/her life span, and make a decision.

Christianity best addressed this question to say that "Your soul can be saved by faith in Jesus Christ".

Hmmm????

You can disagree... But please qualify your position???

Hmnmmmmm?? I don't know?? Is it the big words?? Looks like simple english to me..

Hmmmmmmmm...

Why do you disagree??

Is that better??? Or is disagree still to big a word??

Maybe if you didn't go to those types of conventions you would understand simple and basic english..

Let me know if you need help with that sentence??

A faith question?? I guess my issue is why have faith in something that is not provable, in fact can be proven to be incorrect.. I have faith so every Sunday I go to church to listen to some moron spit into a microphone and wave a book around.. And then I am going to give him some of my hard earned cash.. I am going to listen to some moron tell me how horrible I am and how I am a sinner and fall short of the glory of god.. I am then going to pay this moron for insulting me and my family.. Despite the fact that in Christs own words, he tells us not to judge.. So?? Faith is paying some moron to sin??

I guess what is baffeling to me is that, for whatever reason. Religious people have faith in god, but not in humanity?? God created humans.. Why not have faith in them?

Is faith really spending the one life, you know to exist worshiping a questionalble god and book, all so you might have a chance at a life you have no evidence does exist??

Seems to me faith in god is a waste of life..

This definition applies to those that blindly believe in all things science. If a guy in a white smock says it, it must be true. Just replace nun and monk with researcher and scientist.

Where to start?

To find the truth.

There are too many mutually exclusive religions for that to stand. Religion does not seek truth, but answers. The accurac yof the answers do not matter in religion, only that they are answers people want to hear or that require no further thought. That is why we hjave always seen the gods of the gaps.
To find true peace and joy in this life and the life to come
See above.
. To recieve the blessings God has in store for us but which arae conditional upon some action on our part.
Only in your religion.

To become the people we are destined to be.

Only in religions that believe in predestination (and therefore no free will, no sin, no salvation, and no Christ).

None of what you said applies to religion and only some of it applies to Christianity.

I think I can answer this question as the following

Think of life (or the burning questions of your life) like a deep dark tunnel.

Some people are not afraid of Deep dark tunnels and walk skip or jog right through without a care in the world. Walking through a tunnel is childs play to them. What is there to be afraid , it is just a tunnel?

Others are afraid to go inside of deep dark tunnels and wallow outside looking for something to get them through the tunnel. Maybe they are afraid of some monster urking in the darkness, or maybe they dislike not seeing the ground--or they dislike narrow passage ways.

Religion provides a method of confronting these fears for those that have Deep Dark tunnel Phobia. It shines momentary light for those afraid of monsters. It brings the ground closer to view for those that need to see the ground to walk upon it. It gives the impression of a wide and spacy breeze way for those that dislike narrow passages. Religion provides to the individual what is necessary for that individual to go through that Deep dark tunnel. EVEN IF IT CONTAINS LIES!!
