Good question OP. At the end of the day, the further you are from the propaganda and common sense the more likely you are to be conservative.
Follow the money.

The media AKA PROPAGANDA are owned "liberals". It's always been this way. The wealthiest zip codes are primarily "Liberal" too, but we're supposed to believe it's conservatives who "only care about the rich" - speak of propaganda. With their influences they control those nearest their assets most.

It became especially bad with the internet. For example, California was a red state before the internet, never mind enhanced Chinese trade, which helped to promote it blue as well. First they took silicone valley, then they took the state. Now people are leaving in droves spreading the influence elsewhere, and it stinks.

Dependency is a major factor. Those living in big cities are far more dependent than common. The more dependent you are the easier target of propaganda.
