I believe that we did have to go into Iraq. I also believe that the war was fought and won in the first 3 months.

I blame Bush for entrusting Rumsfeld to win the peace. We never should have been occupiers.

We were destined to inherit the nation building mission by removing Hussein. Why do you think Bush I stopped short of Baghdad the first time? Junior might not have known his history/tactics, but George Sr. sure did.

We were destined to be in an insurgency fight from the time we crossed the LD. The Army damn well knew it after what happened in Mogadishu in 1998. Rumfeld had his head up his ass perpetually and though wars could be won with gadgets and not on the ground.

I agree with part of your assessment, Rumsfeld was a disaster. However, it ultimately is Bush's responsibility for sticking by Rumsfeld for so long. How different would things be if we had had Gates earlier or the whole time? We can only speculate.

If I recall when those 8 soldiers went down a coupla weeks ago, when that afghan soldier opened fire I didn't see a whole lot of that at all. So much for refocusing eh? whats been the costliest year in Afghanistan so far RW? go check. Oh wait you don't do links so.....
