They did not fit the precise definition of socialist, which is that government owns industry in name.

Hitler said that nationalizing industry was not needed when all you had to do was nationalize the people.

Make no mistake, industry was not taken over by the Nazi regime, but they certainly manipulated them any way they wished.

So the reason they called themselves socialists was, they hated democracy and wished to have a massive nanny state. In essence, fit the term socialist perfectly in every respect EXCEPTE in owning industry by name.
