I imagine the fruits would be small right now. But over time they could become very important. They've been our enemies for decades. A few years back everyone was talking about "winning the hearts and minds" of our enemies. Shutting them out and closing dialogue is a COLOSSAL failure of foreign policy on the part of America.
Cuba should be booming right now. They'd be a top destination for everyone in this country. They're the closest tropical Caribbean island to us in the world.
We can SEE THEM from Key West. Why haven't we handled that problem in all these years?
I am the historic preservationist for our city. Not a real big deal- we're a 20k population WHEN the university is in session.
But anyway- I am very cautious about the dilution of culture in Cuba, should the embargo be lifted.
I'm also in Marketing and Public Relations by profession, and I've seen the deleterious effects of both. That said, I believe that an onslaught of free-trade and free-market policies could have the potential to absolutely ruin the culture of Cuba.
As I've said, Cuba is frozen in time. And in so many ways that is a good thing. Preserving the character of a culture while opening it up to the onslaught of marketing and public relations could be ruinous to that very culture.
