Whats up with this and the statue?

Same reason people put money in the plate at a church service.

I remember a Benny Hinn shtick where he influenced (more so then hypnotized) a fervor of audience members running up to the stage to toss money. He did it by having his staged doners start off the run in order to influence or embarass others into participating as if a normal and spirit instructed act. The trigger affect even surprised Benny into laughing at his own audience at how stupid they acted and how gullible they were.

I remember seeing. that statue In the godfather when Vito Coreleone killed that other gangster after he had put money on that statue.... I remember asking myself where that money goes to and whether while it is being taken off the statue that some of it doesn't end up in someone pockets...I found it very humorous almost as humorous as being in Vegas and being told by a catholic parishioner That he went to church there and was told that the church accepts casino chips as donations....

What is supposed to do?

why are they giving the statue money?

Don't know. But if you wish to compare bizarre religious practices I hear there are a ton of them in Judaism.

Like it's OK to pay a stranger to recite a prayer for the dead for a parent, but it's not OK for the daughter to do it.....

Is it true that the guy who cuts the foreskin off of the baby then sucks the bloody penis? Is that true? I honestly don't know.

I do know that you have to cover any Judaic books before you have sex....kind of funny considering you are always pointing out the weird sexual practices of Christians.

Is it true that it's OK to burn down somebody's house if your Rabbi tells you too?\

Is it true that ALL knowledge is contained within the Torah?

I hear you also believe you can cure Hepatitis by placing a pigeon on your naval. Must be one powerful bird.

I hear you too believe the world is only 6,000 years old. Talk about stupid...

I have also learned that you must be super doper extra careful where you drop your cut off fingernails or you might cause a woman to miscarry.

guno Can you tell us the truth of these 'habits'?

That scene is so reminiscent of the Priests of Bel. For those who never read
the missing text
called "Bel and the Dragon", a left out Apochrypha
which is supposed to be Chapter 14 of the Greek version of Daniel
"Daniel and the Priests of Bel"
Dan 14:3 Now the Babylonians had an idol called Bel (the Sun God/HARVEST GOD ), and every day they provided
for it twelve bushels of choice flour and forty sheep and six measures of wine.
14:4 The king revered it and went every day to worship it.
(today they still make an offering, a wafer and wine and bow and kiss this idol Bel as seen as the Gold
plated radiant sun on the pedestal they parade around.)
Throughout Hebrew text it talks about the fallen one Belial who was also known as BAAL.
But he was never an entity, just an idol with no power but that which the priest gave it in deception.
The story talks about how the priests ASKED FOR SEED/HARVEST OFFERINGS TO BEL and said Bel ate the food when
it was they who snuck in with their family and ate the food.
You can not cruise through a religious broadcast today without seeing them request seed money to harvest,
claiming it's for Jesus when you surely know it lines the pockets of the preachers using this same old worn out
Harvest god scam.

Anybody who's ever spent time in downtown Vegas or on the strip knows that chips are as good as gold. You just need a lot of the things to impress anyone:

What is supposed to do?

It's a festival in honor of Our Lady of the Fisherman. As early as the twelfth century, in Sciacca Sicily, Mary the Mother of Christ, is said to have intervened for some people of Sciacca in miraculous ways. A festival in her honor is held there each year--and also in Boston because immigrants from Sciacca and Sicily decided to be part of the celebration.

Centuries ago, fisherman played a huge part in transporting the original statue from where it was commissioned into Sciacca, and are still awarded the honor of carrying it through the streets.

The statue is supposed to do nothing. It is an honoring and a remembrance by people of help from heaven. It's a festival, a party, a celebration.

Anything can made to appear bizarre, and the further back the tradition goes, the more likely the meanings have been lost and buried in the sands of time. We so easily forget our history--even our own personal pasts. Besides, it is so easy to mock the unknown history, culture, and customs of those of which we are invincibly ignorant, especially if such mockery brings the mocker ecstasy and satisfaction, however temporarily.

so what about all the other festivals where they drag the status around and pin money to it and throw kisses

why did people get so upset when their idol fell??

I know of no festival where statues are "dragged around." Traditionally money attached to statues is given to the poor and needy, sometimes the poor and needy of the local neighborhood, and other times to a particular charity serving a poor part of the world.
