One of the characteristics of liberals is they are able to tolerate a wider range of behavior and a wider range of beliefs, the outcome of that is the bigger tent works better for Democrats. America is on her third conservative party, the first two have fallen by the wayside, and now the present Republican party has the tea party hanging on its tail. As the moderate segment is the largest group of voters, statements like the above clearly shows the author of the post isn't aware of exit poll surveys. All exit polls in the 2012 showed that the moderates were the largest voting group.
But to be honest, the Democratic Party isn't exactly a safe haven for moderates either.
If a well organized party positioned in the center ever emerges and if it can maneuver around all the barriers the two parties set up to be challenged through their legislation, both the GOP and Dems could be very well marginalized.
Both parties have contributed entirely to the polarization of America as they move further to the extremes.
