Bush inherited a balanced budget, passed trillions in useless do nothing spending bills that blew up the balanced budget and led to minimal economic growth. Then Bush started 2 wars and totally mismanaged those wars resulting in total devastation for America. Bush then crashed the economy epically, leaving America in ruin.

Trump inherited a US annual deficit of $587B, passed massive spending bills like Bush, blew up the deficit viciously, had a weak low growth economy (only +2.13% GDP growth in 2019) and then blew up the budget worse with $3.1T deficit in 2020 (Biden has dropped that all the way down to $1.1T in 2022). Trump also failed miserably at a world health crisis with the US having the most cases and most deaths in the entire world. Trump also incited a riot at the Capitol based on total lies.

Republicans like to fabricate success, but I see no real deal big boy successes from Bush or Trump, only failures, blow ups, riots, impeachments, deficits, recessions, and weak low GDP growth.

Obviously Government has a role in the country, and should have a role. The Founders laid thst role out in Article I, Section 8 of the Constitution. I don’t find any of those 18 specific items suggesting the Government has a role to support or interfere with the lives of individual citizens or private business except in cases of interstate or international commerce.

In fact progressive policies will not cause or allow government to run anyone's life, instead they will protect millions of Americans from having their lives run by the super-wealthy - which is pretty much how it is now.

People's houses and most cars are owned by the banks, everyone has to take on massive amounts of debt just to survive. People have to take out massive student loans to get thru college. We are almost all defacto slaves to the super-wealthy.

Even when we work our whole lives, in the end our entire savings go the the medical industry which in turn is owned mostly by the banks.

What does the Government protect these people from? In my experience it tends to protect them from the consequences of their own decisions and choices. That’s not the appropriate role for Government, so far as I’m concerned.

I say that as someone who COULD have used the Government to benefit myself. I’m technically disabled. I have learning disabilities, neurological issues and a very obvious birth defect. My parents taught me better than that and until very recently I’ve never asked for or accepted any form of assistance. Even now, the accommodation I requested from my employer was less than what my family and medical team thought I should ask for.
