What Is The Real Reason Our Soldiers Have To Wear A Backwards Flag???

The article states that when the flag is displayed on a moving object it must face forward. We have to assume our soldiers are moving objects.

Out of curiosity when did the army put the flag patch on the fatigues in the first place? Ik ow that in the late 60's and early 70', we had no flag on our uniforms

I assume it happened when we went for rank and insignia unifomity among our allies with whom we often share bases and commanders. With similar uniforms it would be crucial to know what nationality a soldier is at a glance.

Also I have to assume the right shoulder is chosen because in military parades the soldiers always pass the reviewing stand left to right so they may salute to their right.

The U.S. flag embroidered insignia is worn so that the star field faces forward, or to the flag’s own right. When worn in this manner, the flag is facing to the observer’s right and gives the effect of the flag flying in the breeze as the wearer moves forward. The appropriate replica for the right shoulder sleeve is identified as the reverse side flag (see fig 19–133).

I've heard some really lame excuses why the Army wears a backwards flag patch....but it hasn't always been this way.

How the flag is displayed is important. It's not just the starts that matter on our flag...but the strips as well....so this excuse that the stars are in a place of honor is total BS.

What do you guys think?

On a scale of 1 to 10 on my "this is a life changing important event for me" it's at a -509,367,529...........
Then if you have something better to do feel free to do it.
Cool!! Thanks for your permission dad!!!!

(let's break out the aerosol cans and the incendiary rounds!!!)
Because the way it is makes it look like you are charging forward and not retreating
Some people worry about the dumbest shit........
Some people are assholes.....but who says I'm worried?

Here's the rub.....they have to have had some reason to change it.....because everyone knows a flag sewn on a uniform doesn't blow in the wind. It's either stitched on or velcro'ed on.

Unless they're backing up....does the flag switch shoulders then?

In this context it's a figure of speech......... As for assholes? Who isn't from time to time........? :D

It's only backwards if it were a static display of the flag. It is not. That has already been adequately explained. As for other countries I couldn't say but just a quick look at European flags they look about the same either way.

With it just being dated 2003, it could have been one of two guys-
John M. LeMoyne - Wikipedia. He left in Oct., no controversy.
This guy took over then-
His controversy-
Hagenbeck is controversial, as his planning for Operation Anaconda bordered on negligent, as he excluded air component planning until two days prior to the operation commenced. This planning lapse caused chaos in the first few days of the operation, which in turn led top Taliban and al Qaeda leaders to escape into Pakistan.[1]

It does not matter how other countries wear or fly their flag. The US does as it wants, and has it's own regulations as to how the flag is worn or displayed.

For example, the US flag is never "dipped", with the exception of Naval ships "officially recognizing" each other in passing. It also with only a single exception is never flown lower than any other flag. And that is at the UN Headquarters. There it flies even with all other flags, but below the UN flag.

Now as to why it is backwards, that is because of the arm it sits on. In the military tradition, the right side is the "side of honor". We salute with the right hand, in a formation the person to the right is the most senior. If passing somebody from behind of a higher rank you pass them on their left, putting them to your right (and saying "by your leave"). And these traditions actually stretch back thousands of years.

When the flag was put back on the uniform, it was not spontaneous as it had been previously but thought out. This time the Union was reversed, to show it is always moving forward. And for the flags of most countries, how can you tell if they are reversed?

What does a reversed Canadian flag look like? UK? Japan? Most flags are the same from either direction, so they could be reversed but you would never know that.

And finally, not all wear the US flag. The Marines almost never wear one, and the Navy uses the Gadsden Flag. Only the Army and Air Force really wear the flag on their uniforms.

You know that isn't true.
Reversing Belguim's flag changes it...same with Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, France, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Liechtenstein, Portugal, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia,.......

Which has not a damned thing to do with the United States. So even mentioning it is pointless.

I do not care what they do, nor how they display their flag. And in equal measure, I could not care less what they think about how we do it.

Some countries still have their soldiers do that silly goose step. Some still put their Admirals in silly pointed for and aft caps. Some drape so many medals and awards off of their uniforms that it looks like they are performers in a really bad opera.

Hey, if they think that looks great, they can knock themselves out as far as I am concerned. I have better things in my life to worry about than how other countries wear their uniforms.

If that's the case, why bring it up?

I have absolutely no idea, you are the one that brought it up in the first place.

I can not help it if you are obsessed with what other nations do, or do not like the reason why something is done.

That is all your problem, not mine. Several people told you the reason why, this is all your problem that you refuse to accept it.

And your refusing to accept it actually has not a damned thing to do with the facts. No more than somebody being a flat Earther makes the planet any less round.

It's not reversed. When worn as a shoulder patch the canton (blue field w/stars) is always facing forward as if marching into the wind.

It is the regulation of the Department of Defense that the American flag patch on all fighting forces’ uniforms is to be displayed with ‘the star field facing forward, or to the flag’s own right’.
